Last month I went by Cape Harbour to check out their unique landscaping. Among the photos I took were these of a Veitchia joannis I picked huge fruit from last spring. These things are great germinators and I have about seedlings in pots and going wild. What a great palm. Anyway, my favorite V.j. had a mess of green seeds and was flowering again. The flowers are white and airy looking. Enjoy.

I love Veitchia's. There's something about them that's so special. V joannis is a gorgeous species.

Thanks for the pics.

Green seeds. Should be another great harvest. Seeds turn bright red when ripe.

Thanks for the post, Meg. A friend of mine gave me some seeds and I just planted them in the ground. They are, of course, still very small but I think they grow better when you're able to plant them small. Keep sending pics. I'll be in Ft. Myers at the end of September. Good Luck, Peter

Jeff Marcus just called ... I orderd 75 joannis seedlings from him and they are on their way.

Can't wait to have my acre of paradise on Nevis covered with joannis palms!!

Any tips on growing would be appreciated.

Well, we can get the sheep, and mulch, and Nevis has plenty of rain where I am (65 " per year) so I ought to be a happy camper. And it never gets below 70 degress except on a rare occasion. Thanks, Manly!

Last night I went home and photographed my 6 V. joannis 1g seedlings (100% germination) and the one planted in the back yard. My seedlings germinated in 3 weeks only 6 months ago and one of them has already gone pinnate. The one in the back yard was given to me as a seedling in May 2008 by Rusty on Pine Island. Look how it has grown in 15 months! Fast and reliable. I'm still not sure what low temps they can take but I suspect that when larger they can stand down to about 32F for a short time.

Hey Meg,

I agree that those Vetchias are awesome germinators and talk about fast. I have heard that the Joannis are not as fast as the Aricina. I think mine is some sort of Aricina hybrid cause man it is a rocketship.

This is 16 months of growth.
