My 2 yr old ( or so ) seedling B. Super Silver is coming along nicely, but I keep thinking its going to start showing some signs of glaucus... Anyone got to this point / have some experience with Super Silver starting to change..? Also there still seems to be no armor on the petiols  Is this species suppose to be free of armor..?

Dave H - Check this link http://www.rarepalmseeds.com/pix/BraSil.shtml for info from Rare Palm Seeds about the Brahea 'Super Silver'.

I also have one of these palms planted in the ground. The first pic taken Sep. '08 (below Left) is how it looked shortly after having been planted. Second pic shows how it now looks one year later (below Right). It is planted in a sunny location and the rocks were placed around the palm just to give it some protection while very young. It is a very green color but this is typical of most Braheas when small. They should take on that glaucous characteristic later. The same was true of my Brahea decumbens. The petioles on B. 'Super Silver' are unarmed, a nice feature in my opinion.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
