Wow, a pretty spectacular dust storm hit Sydney this morning...

Just got a call from my sister in law in Hampton near Toowoomba, she can't see the trees in her front yard due to the dust. Man, this is one wide spread dust storm.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Where is the source of all this dust?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

I'm at home, another dentist visit today, anyway, I have the whole house shut, all windows and doors and the dust is still getting in, it's the end of the world...

I had to go outside and take some pics and trust me, I have not tampered with these photos in any way whatsoever. This is why I have stayed indoors and closed everything, but the dust is still inside, you can taste it strong. These are taken from my own yard. Man it's thick, what a pile of natures topsoil this is turning out to be. I wonder how these nutrients will affect everything on land and sea.

I parked my car in the middle of my rainforest, (I had the sprinkers on) and now it is covered in mud.

You could even see small patches of red soil on the roads and fotpaths. The train seats were all covered in a thin layer of red.

At sunrise it looked like Armageddon because of the orange sky, but by 8am the sky had faded to a dirty grey similar to fog.

That's what happens when you have strong northerly winds for days on end on the east coast. Pretty weird. But the unseasonal warmth was going to cause weird effects. Their may be some good nutrients in that dust for the garden. I feel sorry for the farmers. All the fertilizer they put on the crops will have blown away in this dust. Not good.

Best regards

I remember when this happened in Melbourne years ago and it took me a month to get the house thorougly clean again. I thought at the time this is a once in a lifetime thing. Wrong again. I will have to hose the dust off my pot plants and the house and car, but the inside of the house is just a total mess. I have coughed and choked most of the day and now really do feel quite unwell. Fortunately the animals are okay, they are showing no ill effects so far.

Brisbane people are allowed to water this weekend, to wash the dust off houses and cars. It doesn't include gardens however. The palm leaves would love a good hose, ah, I remember the days.

We've got similar sandstorms here every year and sand a/o dust in our homes is inevitable. It makes me crazy but i've learned to live with it.

Dust is here again too. Got the sneezes since the big dust storm last week.

My daughter is travelling up North Queensland and she says it's dry and dusty up there as well.

Rain is required thanks....

We're still choking on dust here, and the dewpoint is ridiculously low...there is no humidity, just inland desert winds which dry everything out in an instance. Bring on the rain!

That's exactly how it looks like here some 50 non-consecutive days/ year. Air humidity is around 10% then.

You should wear protection masks.

Wish you enough rain!
