The South Florida Palm Society's next general meeting date is on Monday evening,

October 5, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden,

10901 Old Cutler Road, Coral Gables, FL 33156.

Our special guest speaker will be Dr. Patrick Griffith, Executive Director of Montgomery Botanical Center: The topic will be an overview of the best accessioned collections of palms and cycads in the world. At 7:00 P.M. there will be a light fare of food and back by demand, the answer desk, where you palm related questions are answered. This is usually is a well attended meeting so an early arrival should secure you a good seat.

With the conclusion of Dr. Griffith's presentation, our usual auction will follow. The last two meetings found many rare and unusual species of palms generously donated by our membership. The quantity of palms donated was such that everyone left with some outstanding bargains.

Montgomery Botanical Center: What is it? MBC is a nonprofit institution established in 1959 (originally The Montgomery Foundation). Its was creation by Nell Montgomery Jennings in memory of her husband, Colonel Robert H. Montgomery and his love of palms and cycads. MBC curates living specimens from wild plant populations worldwide. Emphasizing on palms and cycads, the population-based, documented, scientific collections are made available for research in the 120-acre botanical garden of exemplary design. Montgomery Botanical Center educates the community about its scientific and conservation work through workshops, lectures, publications and tours of its scientific plant collections.

Hope to see you there. :)
