Got this palm at a local Home Depot. The label only said "Damaged" on it. They didn't know what it was and the manager of the garden section sold it to me for $10.

Problem is - I have no more room in my yard. So I decided that the bottlebrush tree in the front yard has got to go. Waiting for the association to approve.

Still not sure where the damage is.

Please let me know if I correctly identified this palm as H. coriacea.

Great deal! I don't know my Hyphaenes well but I got a double trunked H. thebaica from that same BB in S. Ft. Myers last fall, so I have a hunch yours is the same species. Your pictures look a lot like my Hyphaene. It's tough as an old boot, laughed at winter cold all last season and hasn't been bothered by summer heat/humidity/storms. We love it despite the teeth.

Meg, sounds encouraging. I just hope it survives in the pot long enough for me to get a permission to remove a tree.

I can't see any damage either. The petioles are very hard and brittle on these so maybe a couple of old leaves got broken off. No biggie. $10 is an outright steal for that.

Hi Alex

Thats a steal! We dont even get them that cheap here and they are indigneous to my part of South Africa.

Just be VERY careful that you dont snap any roots (ala Biz/Joey) else it will sulk for a looong time.

Cheers

Got an approval from my association to plant it in front of my house. Will get to work removing the bottlebrush once I'm back in town.

Dennis, thanks for the word of caution!

Meg, they do look like they are from the same seed pool. How fast does yours grow?

Alex, they are slow, maybe 3-4 fronds per year per trunk. They need no protection in winter.

Would it be OK in a partially shaded location?

I know that most palms would prefer it, but Hyphaenes seem to get full sun in their natural habitat.

Alex here is one i have out in probably one of the hottest parts of the country, Havasu City AZ. It was a single trunk, five gallon two years ago and has not stopped growing even in the winter time, Enjoy
