When I went to the palm sale at Boynton Beach Sept. 26, I can across this Buri palm. I know they are slow growers so I was delighted to find one this large. The ones I've seen in photos have a "Jurassic Park" look to them. The geometry of an opening leaf is cool.

Nice score Meg. I paid a fortune for a tiny shapeless thing that looks exactly the same today as it did 18 months ago,. Other people find the big palms without having to remortgage the house or find a busy night time street corner.

Nice, well grown palm. The undivided end of the fronds are cool. From this pic from the PACSOA site, I'd say Jurassic is a good description.

Meg, that's a nice palm despite its slow initial growth. I liked it enough to plant two of them in the garden. Here is the larger of the two taken a couple months ago.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!
