I was at the book store over the weekend and picked up a palm book called: "Cultivated Palms of the World" by Don & Anthony Ellison. Very high quality pictures in it. Anyway, I was looking at a series of pictures on Pritchardias when I came across the Pritchardia Gaudichaudii. It had very erect fronds and looked quite different from the other Pritchardias. Is the name a synonym of another palm? I tried googling it and did not find much about it. There were some references to P martii, but the picture I saw did not look like any P martii I've ever seen (which is not much...).

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Thanks, Michael...

It sure was a pretty picture. Don't have any P. martii's, but might be adding it to the yard now.

I had a P. martii, but the frost this year has killed it. My first ever loss to frost... though it has been a particularly bad Winter in this part of the world. Lovely palm.

I agree, P. martii is one of the nicest looking palms around. P. hardyi, P. minor, and P. viscosa should have a similar look as well.

I certainly wouldn't leave out Pritchardia glabrata either . It is one of my favorie Hawaiian Pritchardias. Here's a pic of one at Ho`omaluhia Bot. Garden.

The first 'pedigreed' palm I ever bought was P. gaudichaudii. I had seen it in an old book Palms in Australia by David Jones and just had to get one. It took me a few years but eventually I found one. It is the toughest little palm too. It has survived frost, heat waves, drought, floods and my very inexperienced methods of nurture. I refuse to call my precious little gaudichaudii a common peasant type name like martii, its an aristocrat. Now to the prettiest of the pritchardias, as that seems the way this track is going to head, definatley, without a doubt, P. beccariana, with P. thurstonii a close second.

How about some final results from your frost experiments Michael?

Sorry to get off topic.

Here's one final result Jonathan, my P. martii is dead. My first palm in-ground to be killed by frost.

I will have a look at my plants and see if I can find the old thread for an update... might take me a few days to get around to it though...

Such a special palm genus particularly here in Hawaii. It's nice to see them so widely planted locally.

Here are a couple of photos I took of P. martii in habitat on Oahu island while hiking with Wai'anae Steve in September.

You got it pretty close but left out a "w" (oo) sound. More like, "gow di chow dee eye" = gaudichaudii

At least that's how I've always heard it pronounced but why be concerned as it is no longer a valid species.

Here is a pic of three P. martii side by side.
