Wollemia nobilis "hiding" in the papyrus

img_2902.jpg

That's a little odd -- since Wollemia nobilis is such a unique/rare tree, one would think they would have planted it as a specimen tree in a much more high profile location (?)

Sarasota, Florida USA (zone 9B) - 1 acre with approx. 91 types of palms & many other plants/trees

My two favorite palms are Teddy Bears and Zombies... zombieteddybear2-compressed.jpg

Its growing outside Universe of Energy where they have audiomatornic dinosaurs inside. There are also cycads planted here and a couple other Wollemia. I thing the papyrus had just grown out of bounds, maybe they left it to keep them kind of hidden until they get bigger,

Beautiful trees. I still think they look a bit better in CA. For some reason, they are just more exuberant bloomers here, but they also lose more of their leaves and look like thorny twigs.

Most that I see around here and that we grow always flower with foliage. Our old specimen here is flowering very heavily. It was planted decades ago and previously was about 50ft tall. Hurricane Charley took it down in 2004. It has since grown back to about 20ft and this year is the first that it has flowered heavily since it broke off.

Here it is last week

and here it is in 2003, a year before the hurricanes of 2004

Eric, It is amazing the stuff that grows at Disney and that you grow at Leu Gardens.

What you look for is what is looking

Very nice Eric. I was at the Huntington Botanic Garden over the weekend and took a couple of pics.

Here's Ceiba speciosa:

And here is a hybrid, probably speciosa crossed with insignis. You can just make out the pink streaks in the flowers:

Very nice silk floss... I had 2 grown from seeds, and now I have none as the termite seems to love munching on them... But, seeing those photos, they are worth growing.. so time to get a few more seeds and try again.

A few in the neighborhood.  The first is more upright, the second more spread out:
