None on the list are growing in my garden, so I selected Corypha umbraculifera. I saw some monsters in Costa Rica, and they are monumentally impressive when trunking. (See post #12 in this link: http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=12056) The only fan palms in my garden are Coccothrinax argentea and fragrans, Rhapis humilis, a variegated Rhapis, and Licuala ramsayi.

What ? No red latan ? Such a philistine :mrlooney:

Peachy

You're asking me to torture red Latania in my cold, wicked little garden? You have a cruel streak, Peachy. :mrlooney:

They are surprisingly cold hardy. Mine have never been touched by frost and there have been 2 bad ones since I bought the first reddy. My smaller one made it through this winter very happily and it did go below freezing several times. I thought the smaller one may be more delicate as it is really really red, all over. People often say what an unusual dracaena !! The cant believe its a red palm. I know they can grow in Sydney and that isnt exactly the warmest of places in winter. If I was truly cruel I would put a photo of it as my avatar, invest in gillette shares and wait for the wrist slashings to begin.

Peachy

I came. I saw. I purchased

27.35 south.

Warm subtropical, with occasional frosts.

Dear Mike :)

That's impressive ! :greenthumb: Till now i have not come across this variety here, since our borassus looks lot like a washy in respect to their throns arrangement in their fronds.

Bismarkia is nice, but my best where I live is my Livistona decora.

Oakley, California

55 Miles E-NE of San Francisco, CA

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

Kris

Just one question

How high does the Borassus grow?

Posted

Dear Patrick :)

Nice question,As california has washies, here in south india we have a similar looking palm by name borassus flabifier.Like washy filifera which puts out huge trunk even here we have borassus.F which is heavy trunking version and a weak looking version like washy robusta.

But the borassus.F both the varities are highly tropical palm and slow growing compared to the Washy robusta's.And the fruits of Borassus flabifier is highly edible and tastes terrefic too.

Now about the height they grow : 58 to 62 feet Maximum. And could die due to lightning strike.Since in south india we have similar climate to florida state climate but no cool or frost ever seen.

And this is a non clumping palm with a trunk diameter of about 36 inches but for the heavy version that i call as big mama would be twice of that size.

And all have a life expectency of about 120 to 130 years or so !

Here are some links for you to see & know more on this borassus.f palm..

Borassus flabellifer

Borassus Fruits...

I hope those links have answered all your questions in relation to that palms height & size dimensions... :hmm::)

Lots of love,

kris :)
