North Queensland Native Palms

So glad everyone is enjoying this thread as we are too in reliving the adventure. I'll add just a few more habitat pics here for now, then we'll begin another thread or two on the Ingham Botanical Gardens and we'll show you some palms from a couple of the most outstanding nursery palm displays you are likely to see anywhere in the world.

From the Paluma range near Townsville, where Laccospadix palms live.

Here's Andy on a boardwalk at the back of an environmental centre on Paluma. There's all sorts of plants here, including palms, a great little spot that only Andy and I discovered, ratpackers can be sneaky like that.

"Where you two blokes been ?",

"Nowhere...why ?"

As Wal mentioned, whilst we were in the area, our tour guide was Michael (Aussiearoids). Michael did a great job lining up all of our local visits to habitat as well as gardens and nurseries...thanks mate!

We also got a short tour of Michael's place in Tully, dodging light rain showers.

Here is my photo take on those Arenga australasica palms. I think they look really great in their native habitat, and as Daryl mentioned earlier right up to the beach. Sorry if they're similar to the Daz portfolio, but these are the only ones I recall seeing.

Here's some pics from around Nic's place at South Mission Beach, my new best friend. Hi Nic.

Native palms and cycads grow on the steep hillsides of his property.

One more from me for the habitat thread. I took this photo somewhere between El Arish and Babinda. You can see islands of natural vegetation enveloping the creeks, with Archontophoenix alexandrae in it's full glory. It is such a joy to see stands of Alex palms in their home backyard.

Hi Michael, I was wondering about his place as he would have taken the full brunt. I still thought it was solid enough to hold up, just goes to show you how strong Mother Nature can be.

There are several other palm species growing locally at Mission Beach. Here is Arenga australasica growing right down to the shoreline...
