Wal, very few of the big dypsis will survive in South Florida apparently. I know Jeff Searle said that D. manajarensis seems to do fine. Maybe some locals can chime in as to why they don't grow that many.

Why won't big dypsis grow well there? They grow fine here.... and we are just as humid & hot.

We can grow many of the big species of Dypsis here. D. carlsmithii, D. mananjarensis, D. prestoniana, and D. canaliculata are just a few. Some are slow growing here, especially compared to more tropical and wet areas like Hawaii and parts of Australia. The reason also that you don't see many that are at a large size now is, we kind of got off to a late start compared to say growers and collectors in SoCal. But they will grow faster here with our rains and heat, so in time, we'll have some beauties in collections to see. Believe me.....I'm pushing these!

Jeff kinda fessed up on this, but he and I have talked and I /we? also think that so many OTHER palm grow fast and great there, that people think "whats the big deal with those Dypsis anyway? Why would you want one you have to wait for"?

While here, he told me how many he grows now on his property and that he wants to commercially grow them for seed export. I rolled my eyes on that one.....when he wasn't looking of course.

I would like to thank all folks responsible for Paul and Matt's/Matt and Paul's Fairchild PRA. As Tom (Tikitiki) said, it was the most enjoyable and insightful Fairchild experience all the FM's I talked to ever had. The quality of the photography of the Palm's in this thread speaks for itself and for Matt and Paul/Paul and Matt. They are very accompolished.

Special thanks to Ken for the graciousness he and his family extended to these special visitors. The same goes for Jeff. By the way, I don't mean to be pushy but could someone quickly get me the species of that Orania next to the Borrassus in Post 160? Geeze, I need to take a powder!

It is Orania palindan, and it is a favorite of mine as well. It seems to be in constant seed production there at Fairchild. In regards to the Dypsis, many of the larger, rarer species just haven't caught on yet, as established specimens need to be seen first before someone would want to get them.

Y'all know it was a pleasure being with all of yous toos.

There are some great points made here about the differences in palmage between what M&P are used to and what they saw here. In additin there were some other things (cultural mostly) that stood out as differences between "here and there".

One was that although P&M thought we would speak funny it turned out that the only thing different was they way we pronounced palm names. Hence all the pronunciation guides in this post. Thanks P for helping with that.

Another was that M is used to using a turn signal to get the attention of the driver next to him to give him the picture that he would like to change lanes and that could the other driver please slow down so he could get in.??? That's not the way its done here. In fact the use of a turn signal shows weakness and indecision, Here we speed up to just within inches the bummper of the car in front of the car next to us and abruptly swerve into the tiny space left when the driver next to you slams on his breaks and shoots a finger. The finger is a sign you made it ok. Jeez is that so hard M?

Then there were the more obscure differences that could only be measured by someone familiar with drinking large amounts of beer. We all qualified for this so we all experienced the IPS story telling time. The Florida stories were shocking to P&M. Imagine that? After a through rekindeling of numerous Palm Fest stories, Biennial tales (BS you were mentioned ) and stories of "The Palm Society" (Teddie Buhler, you were mentioned several times!) P&M were flabbergasted at what goes on over here. They claim that Cali PRAs rearley contain any of the exciting (and sometimes racey) stories we have. One I forgot to tell them was when a man that came to all our meetings showed up at a meeting at FTBG one night and so did his wife. She told the entire group that her husband had been boinking another member. Oh MY.

I have to admit, this thread hadn't lived up to my expectations of epic palms until pages 3-4 kicked in. Then the palms and snarkacity went into high gear. Since then it's been mind altering... I really need to find time to go back and go through it again from the beginning. I am so envious of a climate that can support monstrous fan palms like Borassus and Corypha.

the next leg of our journey took us to south beach in miami.

believe it or else,there was a master plan.we fanagled an invite to see the fabled garden of mike harris("waykool plantz" on this forum) so south beach was just an appetizer for the main course! after navigating untold turnpikes,tollroads & city streets(all with name AND numbers just to keep solcalians guessing) & nearly getting killed by some florida driver who decided to pull in front of us into our lane on the turnpike from a dead stop,we finally reach the garden.

"uh,we're here.huh huh.like,let us in.huh huh."

mikes garden is HUGE-a-riffic. the figure "5 acres" was bandied about. yes,"bandied."

mattyb with greg & his wife.they are in charge finding the plants & maintaining the garden.

we are still amazed by the coryphas.matt tries to convince himself that they are real.

you sure thats borassus? all the corypha had that sharp edge on petioles. the only other borassus we saw were at fairchild & they were 50 feet tall.
