Maghi, I had some Corypha macropoda (utan) seeds in a plastic container with coco fiber for almost a year and not one seed sprouted. I had given up on them and was going to toss them but decided at the last minute to throw them in a community pot. I set the pot outside and forgot about it for a few months. When I finally checked them, 6 of the 8 seeds had germinated. This was more than one year from receiving the seeds from Kris in India. I was surprised the seeds stayed viable after all that time. I now have 6 seedlings that are on their second and third leaves.

Corypha utan translated into English means "You'd better have a lot of patience!" angry.gif

I've got some a year in pots that haven't done anything so I've taken to ignoring them. But of that lot of seeds 2 sprouted after only about 3 months. Unfortunately I damaged them putting them into larger pots and they died.

Marcel,

Even here in Hawaii where everything grows wild, Corypha utan takes its time. I received a batch of seeds in January, 2007 and potted the seedlings in January, 2008. Here they are in 2010 + six months:

post-3769-12789065324598_thumb.jpg but don't fret about it, I have one surviving seedling of Corypha umbraculifera that is at least a year older that these C utan and it is not even as tall as these and has only three strap leaves. :(

Good luck with your seeds. It may take them a while to germinate.

germination is one thing, the real question is how are you going to grow c.utan in holland?

They have large greenhouses in the Netherlands, VERY large green houses. Just need to work out how to make it grow lying on its side. wink-1.gif

I gave up on the seeds, although they're still sitting in pots out of the way. I ended up cheating and bought 2 plants for $10 each. They had 8 leaves, most of them palmate already.

They are slow in pots, for sure. I bought 2 2.5 years ago... planted 1 and kept 1 in a pot. When I planted it, it had 3-4 strap leaves. Now, it is taller than me (my height is 1.6m). The one in pots, is only twice the size, if that... So, if you want speed... plant it in the ground. It will reward you. Mine did nothing for a year and then... boom, it went off!!

Dear Maghi :)

First of all i must say that these palms(Corypha's)all love & need warmth & light very similar to bismarkia for their grouth.

Like wise for these seeds to germinate you need hot tropical kind of temperature.

For me the corypha's all varities germinate in just 3 months time, and some did even after one and half years later.

But iam sure that even if you germinate these seeds, they cannot be kept in pots for long indoors.Eventually they will die.

Here is a photo link for those new to the coryphan world !

And here is a still of one of the utan's that is growing in our roof top garden..

I have C. utan seed sprouting after lying in my lawn for five years. The earliest they have sprouted was six weeks. Quite a range.

So, I agree, be patient.

I received some seeds from a gentleman in FL a while back, and many sprouted after a few weeks in a hot car in a baggie.  Later I noticed that others had sprouted, only to have the radicle turn brown and seemingly die.  I suspect a fungus of sorts.

The one on the left I dug out with a knife, and the one on the right looks like it may be ready to pop?

I feel that these seeds are still good, but is there any way that I could tell for sure?

The left one lost its embryo,  I guess, and the right one I don’t know … :indifferent:
