Hi everybody,

Our next meeting of the Costa Rican Palm Society for Saturday February

6 at 10am.

will be in Quepos, as was planned .

The meeting will be held at the property of Othon and Teresa Bueno

which is located just outside the town of Quepos in the coastal

foothills of the mountains. Othon and Teresa have approx 750 acres

that they are developing into an eco-resort (they are currently in the

planning and approval stage).

There are already good trails that run along the river to a few waterfalls.

This property has many native palm species including Socratea

exhorriza, Asterogyne martiana, multiple species of Chamaedorea,

Cryosophila guagara, and lots of other tropical plants and palms. In

fact, a botanist onto their property a few months ago discovered a

new plant species there!

Those who want to ....feel free to bring a bathing suit and towel if

you would like to swim in the river. There are a couple nice spots

for swimming near a waterfall.

The Board of Directors will meet at 9am, followed by the general

meeting at 10am. Directions and map will follow at a later date.

I would like to receive all the new e-mails from new people, possibly

future members, so I can extend them an invitation too.I used the

mailing list from the past meeting, please inform me if I left

somebody out.

A few days before the meeting I will send a reminder!

Dont forget to bring some palms for the "auction" !

See you in Quepos!

Jose Maria Cornelis ,

Secretary

Our meeting was postponed until today due to the Presidential election in Costa Rica last weekend. Costa Rica's first female President was elected!

Everyone seemed to enjoy the meeting today and we signed up a couple new members.

I rounded everyone up for a group photo before we started the tour of the property. The last few times we took a group photo at the end of the meeting after some members had already left. We had about 28 people come to our meeting today - most of them are in the photo.

The Trail

Asterogyne martiana growing by the river

I never can remember the name of this plant off the top of my head. When I lived in Florida, I purchased a plant like this at HD that was sold under the name "Jungle Drum". These plants grow all through the forests around here.

Dr Richardson pointing to something

Not sure of the ID on the second photo

These tiny little seedlings were only a few inches tall. I love the way the leaves are pinnate at such a small size.

Nice foliage plant

Relaxing in the river below one of the waterfalls.

In this photo is someone who lives in the US and is a regular poster on PalmTalk. This person is here visiting Costa Rica and came to our meeting. Anyone know who it is?

Cool Jeff! Was Bren there escaping the cold Florida temps?

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!
