Looks just like the two I have, or at least like they looked before their spears pulled.

Dear Matt :)

Your stills do look like a standard Theo, but it can be more clearly ID only when they are put in ground and is having about 4 to 6 feet of trunk.

Here is our theo which is around 3 years old of the 3 theo's this is growing in big barrel, and hope to plant it soon in a couple of months ! And i must say that this one palm which did not show any travel or transplant shock when it came to me as a young sapling from brother M@x.Its a very tough phoenix variety.:greenthumb:

Agree with Kris on the hardiness factor... I too have some of M@x's theos and it recently took 16F with little damage only to the older fronds. The one nearest the house didn't have any damage at all. Jv

Thank you Martin, I hope yours pull through :(

Great links Kris, thank you. I will be planting it soon.

Colin, thank you for the beautiful pics.

Thank you JV.

I saw my first mature theo recently, and was awestruck. It was maintained as a single and looked like a giant blue cycad with a blackish trunk.

hey Matt,

that looks right... here's a pic of the 2 distinct varieties i was telling you about...

Matt I could not see any of the pics you posted but P.theophrasti looks different than P.canariensis or dactylifera and pretty sure its different looking than the others phoenix I have seen. I have one and it sticks out pretty well when you compare them.

Pictures again

plus a picture of the beach, the only place where the the 2 forms grow together . This beach has the biggest stand in the world and was originally planted by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago. This place is a long way from any roads, access is by boat only (unless you wish to trek over a mountain)Yes, that is the dingy used to row ashore to visit the site.

Here are the pics of the theophrasti that caught my attention. It was a stunner, icy blue cycad like leaflets, almost black leaf bases, and a vibrant yellow-orange-green color on the petioles and spines.

Intersting and strange....

When I click on this links,on the first appears my pic of Geonoma gamiova and on the second my pic of Euterpe edulis that dissapeared on a Topic that I started ( summer vacation in Guaratuba) For you folks also????

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!

It's the same for me Alberto, except the pics come up as Moose Knuckle in drag when I click on them  . Something happened a few days ago with the forum that caused some mix ups.

These things are tough, and, some are stunning, with great colors. There's a fine specimen at the Big H "Huntington" with a striking, glowing look, dark leaf bases, luminous spines and vivid green leaves.

BUT!

Not to be confused with anything cuddly, even for the most fervid masochists . . . . .
