I became inspired from Peter Pacific´s Mauritia thread and decided to take a few pictures around town. These Mauritias are growing in a vacant lot area on the Avenue leading to my office. I drive by them every day. I believe the land is owned by the State so they should stay there. The Mauritia, locally known as the Buriti is one of the most beautiful palms in my opinion. And, I am blessed to live in an area that has them all over, even in the middle of the city. The Buriti with fruit is a special sight.

Nice pics Don. For me part of their beauty is the sheer size they can obtain. Be nice if you could show something or someone to give scale to the palm.

Great pics Don :) it is great to see so many Mauritia's growing so well, I think they look so fantastic if grown in the right conditions.

As Tim suggested, somthing for scale would be nice :D

I will go out and get some pictures that give some scale. The third picture in the first post has an Euterpe olearcea in the bottom of the pictures. This gives some scale.

I did not post this picture of the fruit yet. A Mauritia with mature fruit is great sight.

The one we found at Bees Creek down the road was massive... It was very hard to take a good pic of it as it was growing among other things, including a massive clumping Metroxylon next to it.

I can't wait to plant mine... I have 2 getting acclimatised at the moment. Hopefully we don't miss the growing season all together...

Michael,

I am sure they will do quite well in your climate. Although yearly rainfall is not as important as damp roots.

Ari,

I think that it is great that your little Mauritias will go in the ground. I am going to put more bismarkias as well as fox tails you sent me on my place.

Here is a picture which shows some scale. You can compare with the clothes on the line and the houses. Not the high rent district of Manaus, but they have Mauritias in the yard. Actually this one is a remnant of the groves before the city crowded in.

Don your photos of Mauritias are always spectacular. This is probably one of my favorite palms.I have five that will be planted out when our rains kick in.I have never seen a mature one but would imagine that the leaflets move in the slightest breeze and that they almost shimmer in the sun.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Scott,

They are a beautiful tree. Since they are so common here they are not normally planted in the landscape. I am sure yours will do well there. Are you going to plant them in a group? Since they naturally grow in groves it makes a great effect.

Don , I have a low spot at the new place that actually floods during Sept.-Nov..I think a grouping would be great.I just not sure what to underplant them with.

Do you know what is the best spacing I should plant them? I was thinking... I might plant more near my dam.

Scott,

Around here in native stands most of the time there are only mauritias growing as they are fairly dense and shade out other plants. You will find them in association with Euterpe olearcea at times and mauritellia armata.

Ari,

I think if you plant 3 or 4 meters apart they shoud be fine.
