We all know what toasted palms look like by now, and I have plenty. But what palm do you have that surprised you to how well they handled the cold. don't add the typical list that most know do pretty well but add ones that are newer and less known about that did way better then you expected Here are a couple from my experience that surprised me. I had frost 3 mornings in a row, temps around 31.5 to 33 those 3 mornings. None of these where protected.

Chambeyronia macrocarpa of 3, no burn at all

Kentiopsis oliviformis of 4, no burn at all.

Dictyosperma album var. conjugatum 2, no burn

Dictyosperma album var. ruba ? 5, a little burn on 1

Coccothrinax montana 2 no burn.

Coccothrinax fragrans 1 no burn but under a canopy.

Areca triandra, many in the garden, huge surprise they all look great.

Bactris gasipaes, some burn but no worse then some smal royals next to it.

Chamaedorea ernesti-augustii, all the Chamaedorea i have did well but this one looks so tropical it surprised me.

please add your positive palms!

My suprises were my Liculua grandis, which had far less damage than the mature specimens at Ann Norton. Also my Stilt Palm had minimal damage.Ann Norton was a real suprise because of the numerous sensitive specimens that went right on thru notwithstanding the long-term cold. Examples were Areca catechu, Double Coconut, Neovetchia storckii, Satakentia liukiuensis that look unharmed. I posted some shots on Travel Log under Ann Norton.

Mine was a Pseudophoniex ekmanii I bought from Mike Harris awhile back as a large 3gal, it's been steady growing pushing three new spears this year. Pensacola FL 13 nights below freezing for up to 10hr periods low was 21˚f . No protection at all,in open area. Hasn't shown any damage @ all, Go figure.

21 degrees? maybe your palms havnt defrosted yet. that is insane. the last few nights here have been prertty chilly with alot of moisture still on the ground from our storm but havent had anything below 40 yet.

I'm actually in Central Fl., but I've had a few surprises during the Jan 2010 freeze (lowest temperature at my place 25 F).

- 4 ft. Cocos nucifera "golden malaysian", has turned yellow with some leaf spotting, as it does every winter

- small Acrocomia crispa, had just a sheet over it (not wanting to get too close  ), completely undamaged

- 2 ft. Gaussia maya, wrapped in a blanket, completely undamaged

- 12 ft. Prestoea acuminata, lower half of crown wrapped during the freeze, roughly 50 % defoliated, has looked as bad at alot higher temps.

- 9 ft. Dypsis cabadae, mostly wrapped in a sheet, roughly 1/3 defoliated

Note that most of these were covered/wrapped, but without supplemental heat, this will only help so much. With 2 nights in the mid 20s, and many nights below 30 F, I would have expected a worse outcome from the palms listed above. Any more surprises?

Let's preface by saying I live in Coconut Grove, Florida, about 4 blocks away from the Kampong.

I got about 33 F two mornings in a row, I think.

Sorry for any repeats:

Did well ( some surprises):

Areca Vestiaria ( actually have seeds coming out now )

Neoveitchia Storckii

Copernecias did well but not surprised

Pelogodoxa

Satakentia's

Teddy bear

Joey

Carpoxylon macrosperma

Chamby's both hookeri and macrocarpa

Not all Pritchardias fared as well as others. Interestingly, the smaller ones did better than the taller ones. ALL will survive I think.

Dypsis Carlsmithii did well.

Suffering:

Salacca Magnifica

Phoenicophorum Borsignuim

Vershafeltia

Siphokentia Begunii

Areca catechu

Maybe dead:

Breadfruit tree DOH !!!! not a palm Sorry.

I mean

:bemused:

No protection?

For your 12-14 year old, 18" palm?

:o

If it comes thru well, thats something!

As a general note for all, it may take a month or more for all the damage to show up.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

ekmanii do grow a little faster here in Fl. I believe Mike said these were about 6 or 7yrs old,& actually 21" but yes VERY VERY slow, I bought3 of these from Mike H. and thought I'd at least put one to the test. The others are still in pots.I got 3, quart size from Christian F. kingfish that are in the ground no protection no damage.Maybe there standing still in time ?Not to say they won't show damage later, but they should have by know, I would think... Everything else that was marginal is showing signs of damaged these were Torched....Polyandrococos caudencens,Coccothrinax alexandri, hiorami, macroglossa, miraguama ssp miraguama, montana,Copernicia alba, baliana,Dypsis decipiens red form large 10 or 15gal from Phil @Jungle music, decaryi,my blue cycads were also toarched E horridus ect...and the following had moderate to 75% damage Pseudophoenix lediniana, sarentii ssp saonae, vinifera, all were 15 to 20gal plants when planted out last spring.I'd just got home from visiting Mike H (Caribbean palms) place again before the WX hit and ran out of time protecting my U haul full of new purchases. It's a sad site @ my place, but I think most will pull through and one thing for sure I'll be better prepared next year.

Respectfully,
