does anyone know if these two can cross- I have an adult arikuri palm that has produced an entire set of seeds that are 1/3 the diameter of a normal seed, and elongated much more than the usual seed. The only palm near it that was also flowering was my roebelini- i have all the seeds in a sprouting mix and im waiting to see what happens-any thoughts or has anyone tried this before? Mark Heath? Anyone?

Hi, BigBpalms:

Have you cracked a few seed to see if they have embryos? or even endosperm, for that matter?

Best Wishes,

Those two are genetically pretty far from each other, with the common ancestor probably dating back almost a 100 million years. Would be cool if it turns out that it's actually possible.

Cocosoids (Like Syagrus sp) do not cross wth Phoenix.

Are there other cocosoids near...or far from this palm? (bees can bring pollen from far away)

With cocosoids I mean Butias,queens....

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!

sorry i dint state this before- yes i cut some open - the first one did not have an embryo, the second did and the third did, so i stopped cutting and put the other 15 or so in the sprouting box- ive seen seeds of queen x arikuri, and these are much smaller maybe 3/8" in diameter and about 1"or 1-1/4" long, but i have not seem a pindo x arikuri seed? They look just like my regular arikuri seeds in texture, and yes they were ripe and picked before old man winter showed.

Most of these palms will self pollinate --- you have to b ag and emasculate the male inflourescences to prevent the self pollination.

this putative hybrid is impossible - Phoenix crosses with no one but their own, they have no close relative to trial - tho' they certainly are the most promiscuous genus in the kingdom, just incestual only. FWIW worth some species are always the dominant partner, e.g. anything that hooks up with roebelenii always looks more like a roebelenii than the other parent. Even reclinata crosses w/ them are overpowered. Not sure I've seen a roeb. w/ rupicola - anyone? The reclinata/rupicola crosses are gorgeous plants.

S.schizophylla can cross with romanzoffiana, this the S.montgomeryana hybrid, still an unusual find here in Fl. The S.coronata palms seem to cross with just about any other Syagrus, lots of naturally occurring hybrids with it.

Eric,

i was just going to tell Dave about your palms! Thanks for posting the pics!

Bob,

I would say that you have pure Schizophylla seed. Good job, i love the S.Schizophylla! I second what others are saying that it seems impossable for the two to cross. But who knows, maybe some Queen pollen slipped in there, that cross is beautifull!

Then has anyone had any elongation of seed for any reason? I have had 5 sets of viable arikuri seeds from this tree and they are all the standard looking seed- like i said these are elongated 1-1/4" long and only about 3/8" around where as the normal seeds i get are about 1" by 3/4" around, if not a cross im hoping its not some other underlying problem. Ive seen queen x arikuri hybridized seeds and they dont look like this.
