64th Miami International Orchid Show

The South Florida Palm Society and The Cycad Society joined forces to set up an "other plant society" booth at the 64th Miami International Orchid Show this week. At the special request of the organizers of the show -- the South Florida Orchid Society -- we were happy to abide, and somehow our joint booth ended up being the largest at the show. The show started today and runs through Sunday at the Doubletree Hotel Convention Center located at 711 NW 72nd Ave. near the Miami International Airport. Below are a few photos of the palm/cycad booth:

And this is the only plant in the booth that was given an award -- which just so happens to be my very own Encephalartos lehmannii cycad (as I understand it, it is quite unusual for a non-orchid to receive an award at an orchid show... and I am deeply honored to have received such a prestigious "Special Award"):

Enjoy the photos... and hope to see some of you there this weekend.

Awesome coverage Jody, great pics! I'm really glad the cycad and palm societies teamed up to give those orchid folks a taste of what they are really missing! That E lehmannii is a beauty!

Congrads Jody, thats a beauty! What form is it?

Thanks Scott (and Bill). It is not a Kirkwood, so as far as I know it is just the "normal" form... just a very nice, perfectly symmetrical specimen.

Jody,

Congrat's on your ribbon for what looks like a beautifully, well grown cycad. I'm glad to see the Cycad Society being represented, and hopefully will get some much needed attention.

Beautiful work all around!

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

I agree, Jeff... and the nice thing about this particular show is that for any cycad that is sold 10% of the proceeds go directly to The Cycad Society. Same for the palms being sold: 10% goes to the South Florida Palm Society. We tried to get other societies interested in showing/selling some of their plants as well. Hopefully we can have an even more impressive booth next year with several local plant societies participating.

All those palms & cycads are wonderful. Congratulations on the ribbon, Jody.

FYI, Kerriodoxa looks delicate but is surprisingly coldhardy. I didn't protect mine at all this winter and it hasn't got a lick of cold damage (unlike a lot of palms I could mention).

Thanks for the info and photos Jody, and congratulations on your ribbon! Just last night I was talking to another Costa Rica Palm Society member about us setting up a booth at the Annual Orchid Expo in San Jose. We discussed it and then dropped the idea thinking that this show is all about orchids and they would not want another plant society there. You have given us renewed hope that we may be able to do something similar here. We are going to check it out and see if we can set up a booth at next year's show.

That's good to hear about the E. lehmannii taking cold. I kinda thought they had pretty good cold tolerance.

Yep, the South Florida Palm Society's annual spring palm and cycad sale is scheduled for March 20-21 at Montgomery Botanical Center in Coral Gables.

It figures, you invite some palm and cycad freaks and they end up with an imposing dominating monster display. drool.gif
