Pardon me, but isn' t there a forum here called, PALM BASICS FOR BEGINNERS ?

WELL EXCUSE ME >:(

Nothing personal, Jason. PALM BASICS FOR BEGINNERS is where you ask questions like "how to plant a seed?". It's probably the most fundamental question you could ask, and if it was in the correct forum, I'm sure you would end up with a topic that would grow and grow, because it would be at the top of the board due to its importance. In this forum it will soon be lost in the pages of replies to other topics. Having said all of that, if the moderator thinks it belongs here, then that's up to him.:)

I still say you should look into getting a Kentia palm for indoors. They make wonderfully tropical specimens that can even form trunk indoors and look a bit like a coconut, but they are the masters of the indoor palm world. If you put it in a room with a window to let light in, and you don't over or under water them, they will be one of the best house plants in the world. I've got 1 indoors that has 3 times the speed of the one I've got outdoors, they just love room temperature. These seeds take months and months to sprout though, so you're probably better off buying one. Post something in the "palms wanted" forum, and you may get someone who can sell you one. Here is mine as of today, it is 5 fronds from trunking, so probably 2-2.5 years

Jason;

I'm originally from Cleveland, Ohio, so I'm well aware of the challenges of raising plants indoors, especially in a house, especially in the winter.

Your biggest challenge will be to keep some things moist enough. Forced air heating makes the air very very dry, which is tough on many plants. My old house on East 260th on Euclid was my very first Death Camp for plants, orchids especially! :(

The second challenge is giving plants enough light. Incandescent lights, which are typical for a house, don't give enough light to keep many plants happy. Flourescent lights are much better; better still is natural light from outside, but in the winter it's faint and short.

The good news is that washies are TOUGH as nails, and they'll take the desert-dry conditions in your house well. If you have a humidifier, so much the better. They're best in full sun, but they'll take shade, too. They'll stretch in the shade. I'd definitely "spell" them outside in the summer, bring in before frost.

If the Washies do grow, they'll get really huge after a while, so you'll either need a bigger house, or to find a home that can accomodate them (maybe your school?).

You can grow a lot of palms inside, as you'll see. We have people from Holland, Germany, Russia and Sweden raising palms, most indoors, but a few outside.

And, if you don't get your washie seeds to sprout, don't worry. Ask, and we'll be glad to send more to you! Plus other seeds (see the PM I sent you?)

Good luck and we're all rooting for you! Welcome to our nuthouse . . . . . :)

That's okay, it's a good off-topic.

And the answer is that the debate rages on. I believe tha the official word is that "regia" and "elata" are the same, but, many swear otherwise.

Thanks Dave. All my friends think I've gone crazy! "It's not gonna grow here." Ugh I hate people who think I'm a dumb blonde! I'm the complete opposite. (Im not a smart redhead... I'm a smart blonde)

So I'm going to add to my collection mostly over the summer.

And the school idea. That would be cool if they took it in once it got too big!

Thanks for the compliment, and yes, that object is indeed a coconut! That particular one is ornamental (pulled it off a Malayan before it was completely ready, and left it inside with no water or humidity, so it dried out), but I also sprout them indoors in the winter, so when spring hits, they are just ready to go into pots, and they get the entire growing season to grow. I've done this with 2 Jamaican talls so far, and am doing it with 2 Pacific talls at the moment. I've found that they sprout quicker if I float them in bath temperature water 1 hour every day. Two months is the time it takes to germinate with this way, which is pretty good. We normally don't need heat or Air Conditioning in the winter, so humidity isn't as low as in the summer when the Air Conditioning is on. And yes, I am crazy about coconuts! :drool:
