I have been working on this one for some months now. It was dug a little at a time incorporating all my tricks. The "ball" is +- solid lime stone.

First a glamor shot. I set the camera on the ball with delay since I was solo today. Do my colors match? You know how it is with us Gators sometimes. :unsure:

Dick, It was cool and I have a cold. Smiles were hard to come by tody. Also installed 2 Rhapis multifida 6' in a house today. Talk about working with high quality. Tomorrow I will have more smiles off shore hooking sailfish and tuna!

BTW Transplanting Copernicia in the middle of a cold winter is not SOP but this one went so well that the entire ouside of the rock ball was covered in new roots.

seriously, that's a monster palm, and a "rock ball" over here is a dance for the over 50s with music by Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry etc.

Matty, I am also all about DIY. There was a crane operator and a semitractor trailer driver. They had lots of advice :rolleyes: . LOL

Hey Ken,

Your colors are the perfect matching two,, Orange and blue!! God smiles on the Gators,, he made the sun orange and the sky blue!!! :D I will say though that you had quite a task w/ moving that monster, no snarkiness here!!

I am happy i don't have to deal w/ rock/coral up here, but i would rather deal w/ that then the cold!!!

OK Paul may be running late so here's the centerfold shot. Note how it's strapped so that the palm rides at an angle? This is very important for "picking" it and laying it down. The ball is covered in wood and plastic. The leaves were pulled in with a tarp to reduce breakage from ropes.

The ball is more or less flat on the bottom. We dig it so it will "pop" off the rock. It bahaved perfectly. The rock ball may be better than a soil ball because it is durable. Soil has a tendency to squish! :(

That's it Matty. In fact in the photo you posted you can see me chastising Paul for putting expectorant from the night before on the ball. I have known the owner and his family for 46 years. The place is amazing!

Yep Mike thats him. He still does a few jobs here and there.

A big part of doing these special trees is getting the crane guy to put pressure on the tree in just the right way. He knows how to do it. With this one I had the skid steer too and once we had lift pressure on it I tapped it up high with the jackhammer blade against a leaf base and "pop" the rock broke perfectly.

Iam very curious to look at that still..By the way very little visuals of the operation,i came running to see more but hardly 2 stills from ken's work.

Spectacular! It looks like it has been there for the past 30 years.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c
