Looks like a blind snake. It feeds on critters found in the soil. Rarely seen above ground. unsure.gif

I also guess small snake or legless lizard. We find them often under logs or when we are planting - and they move fast. They eat vermin, so they are good. Does it have a ring around its neck? We see a lot of small snakes with orange rings behind the head.

Meg,

No rings, just an irridescent hue to it.

I think Moosey got it. I looked it up and it appears to be a Blind Snake, which apparently are native to East County San Diego. I've never seen one before. He's a wiggly sucker.

Jeff,

Like you've never dug a dig of dirt before. Come on brother. Scooped a scoop of soil? Splashed a sploosh of water?

pauly...? where are you brother?

BS Man planted 11 palms for me during the sale on saturday. I think what he did was dug a dig a dirt. Only because it took him an hour and a half to plant them. His hands were totally black from the soil. And they were 1 gallons and 3 gallons. Go figure.....

thanks Bill !!!!!

Interesting, I never knew they lived in CA. Looks to be about the same size as the local tube snake also found in that same area.

Just an FYI that one of the common names for the Brahminy Blind Snake is the "flower pot snake" since that is where they often live (and would obviously explain how they got to California -- I've found several in the bottom of pots when planting palms) http://en.wikipedia....phlops_braminus

They are, as far as I can tell, a "good invader" since they feed on termite larvae.
