I have 50 or 60 fruit on the ground right now. Tried to clean but they are so juicy that it keeps slipping out of my hand. Tried gloves and same thing. Any ideas on cleaning while they are still fresh?

Once I cleaned Syagrus fruits with a mixer ? (´´batedeira´´) and lots of water inside it.

Alberto, you mean like a hormigonera?

Steve, I clean Syagrus seeds with a wire brush on a long shank attached to an electric drill. I spin the brush in a bucket of water and seeds. Messy and takes a few go-rounds but not as long as hand cleaning.

Thanks Meg, I may hit Home Depot and look for one today. I cleaned my S. amara seeds by hand w/a sharp knife and it took about 3 minutes per seed and w/them the fresher the better. The more they dried the harder the fibers got.

Meg, may I suggest 2 wire brushes taped back-to-back around the shank? Double the cleaning power, and less vibration!B)

put them in a 5 gallon bucket, add some water and hydrocloric acid ( a little ) let them sit overnight , rinse and walah!fruit slides off with little trouble- works great for coontie too

Here is the thread I made regading seed cleaning, Dont forget the youtube video I made at the bottom of the first post.

Thanks again, Luke. I knew someone had posted that brilliant idea but couldn't remember who. I didn't come up with it myself. John, I don't have to tape anything, just attach the brush tool to the shank.

OK Meg, sounds like you're using a wire brush attachment. I had visions of a cheap, wooden-handled wire brush, which would be a bit wobbly. Sorry, didn't mean to infer anything by that!

I've used the acid technique (60% sulphuric) on Syagrus romanzoffiana seeds in the past, as it helps rot away the fibres that trap a lot of the pulp.

John, no problem. I just soak and clean. No one wants me near acids and corrosives.

Frito love the wire brush to drill idea. Just went to HD to get it and will try it tonight I have been sitting on.

3 min per seed is way too long.twang wait to see the results.

A blender? Really?? What attachment would you use to not end up with a Syagrus schizophylla smoothie? :D

Picked up the wire brush and after maybe 5 minutes I have a mess of slimy, pulpy goo. Will rinse off and try another round when the battery for the drill charges.

Since the fruit of Syagrus can be eaten, I thought about drinking the liquid, then changed my mind.

Hey Steve- people are buying up the Acai from the Euterpes like super vitamins. Maybe this the start of nutritional palm smoothies that could really ignite the main culture stream to fall in love with palms and start planting like crazy! Our goal has been achieved and it started from this Forum!

No problem Meg, I have Carpenteria seeds starting to germinate, I am sure you cleaned them with the drill and wire brush method. Thanks, Luke

Can do Tim. First the tree taken Aug last year. Then a plastic jar full of fresh fruit and last about 80 seeds w/most of the pulp gone using the wire brush on my drill in that little plastic jar.

Next step is to get rid of the little remaing pulp and then the fibers. Already planted 15 in vermiculite/perlite 50/50 mix and placed in a plastic rubber maid container.

Sorry bout the bare foot. Couldn't find my red sneaker :mrlooney:

I used the blender on Butia and Syagrus romanzoffiana seeds that have hard seeds. I don´t know how hard are the schyzofilaa seeds....

It takes me up to half a dozen rounds with the drill and brush with a lot of rinsing and straining to get seeds clean. I started out using a battery drill but it didn't have enough power and life to get the job done. Now I use an electric drill kept on the dry side of the driveway while I rinse and sieve on the other side.

Most of my seeds I ferment for a week or two--- seeds will frequently pop out works for Butias

if pulp is too fibrous add a papaya to get started --- papaine is an enzyme that helps to digest fibers.

My 2 cents to the discussion.

Hi, Alberto & John:

I've used a 1.5 H. P. 3-speed Waring blendor connected to a Variac for years to clean palm seed. The blade is reversed in order to reduce cutting of the seed. This apparatus can run at one revolution per second for extended periods without any danger of burning out. Such an arrangement would probably kill a standard blendor very quickly.

In more recent years I've tried paint mixers that fit in drill chucks. The latter work better for very large seed, but for small seed[example, Sabal] the 1.5 H. P. blendor is still better.

Best Wishes,

Thanks Steveo, nice medium size looking palm. How long has it been

in the ground and what was the size when you planted it? Trying

to get an idea what I should expect. Thanks.
