Thought this was kind of a neat photo. This is Victorville in San Bernardino County, inland from Los Angeles. It was formerly known as George Air Force Base. Today it's a major storage facility for airliners from all over the world. There are other storage facilities in southern California (Mojave) and Arizona (Marana, Goodyear) and some of these are also major scrapping facilities (primarily Goodyear and Mojave). Victorville is mainly a storage facility, and most of these airliners WILL fly again after there's been a bit more of a recovery in the worldwide airline business.

I remember how they used to store 747s at Norton AFB, down in San Berdoo (lived across from it) sometimes like 20 at a time, most with Pan Am livery, on BK Eve . . .

Well, it stopped being called Norton AFB in 1994 and has been referred to as San Bernardino International Airport since, and I guess you could call it a "minor storage facility".

Bo, It looks like it could be a little kid's miniatures collection, laid out in the backyard sandbox. Are you sure you didn't come across some old toys while cleaning the closet? :)

Bo cleaned his closet?

I want one of the big ones. Are they for sale?

Do the engines need to be prepaired for storage?

When they scrap is it mostly aluminum they are after? How much does a 747 bring in $s for scrap?

Isn't that the place where Mythbusters have shoot some of their airplane myths? Anyhow it's a cool picture.

I don't like to see Victorville full :( It's an indicator of the state of the industry.

Dean, funny you'd say that because that was my first thought as well (miniature collection), even though I have seen photos like this before.

Ken, the big ones would be the 747s. Some of those are definitely for sale, others are not. Cathay Pacific of Hong Kong just flew in 747 #6 for storage, for example, but as of right now, they're hoping that traffic will pick up, so they can return those 747s to services. Of course, these predictions are always uncertain and fluid, and plans can change accordingly. You could say there are three levels:

First level: take the aircraft out of service and put it into storage. Plan to bring it back into service when traffic recovers.

Second level: Traffic is not recovering as hoped. Put it up for sale or lease.

Third level: No takers. Scrap it.

In some cases the owner of the aircraft can be unrealistically optimistic, keeping an aircraft on the market for many years even though it should be obvious nobody is interested. And the aluminum is an important part when scrapping an aircraft, but there are also hundreds and hundreds of parts that are generally recycled. I.e. resold, and used again in other airliners. When an aircraft goes into storage it's a fairly extensive process to prep it. Covering up engines, doors, windows and any other openings. Also, it's not good for the tires if the aircraft remains static in the same position for an extended period of time so all these aircraft have to be moved a little bit, every now and then.

Ciczi, I believe you are correct.

And Matt, yes, unfortunately not a good thing for the industry with this many stored aircraft. And of course, many more at the other locations I mentioned. And then there are a number of other minor storage facilities that I didn't mention here.
