to tell you the truth I have (1) palm - a triangle dypsis that I am thinking of pulling out and replacing

with a mealy bug. after that - I just dont have anymore room unless I spend $$$$ on major dirt work.

so this may really be it for me !

Start at $100 and it goes up to the point the owner will sell. (Most likely Ron Lawyer)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

So, forget the box and all the gift wrap paper, what exactly will $2500 get you? A 5',6',8' tall palm?

For $2500.00 Jeff you will get a palm 20% smaller than my palm. You know, like the size of yours??? Haha.

Buying big Cycads are not worth the money. I can grow a Nubi or other Cycad to a large size in half the time it takes to grow a 24inch box Manajarensis. However, the Cycad can be dug and moved, or re-sold, whereas the palm is in the ground permanently.

Since WHEN did YOU start following THAT advice!? :bemused:

Oh come on Gary, mine already has two leaves at 9' in height, and ok the caliber might be a smidging less than yours but not for long though. :) I cleared some overhead branches away a few months back and it's going to get blasted with almost all day sun this summer. My second one I planted this past December actually got cold damage on a couple of leaves, the top half, not the entire leaf. But this one will get almost all day sun this summer.

And it's too bad once you plant it in the ground out there that you can't dig it up later and move it. Here we can move palms like that every couple of years or so. :D But why can't you? Palms are moved all the time in almost any climate as far as I know.

What idiot told you to clear overhead growth?????? I wouldn't clear any overhead branches, they need deep shade for optimum growth. Can't believe one of yours got cold damage, what a wimp. The colder it got this winter in So Cal the faster mine grew, no wonder mine is twice the size? As far as digging palms I should clarify, I really meant that when palms get big it is too much trouble to move them unless they are really special. As BS says, I do it all the time. Cycad's you pack up and take them like it's your lunch box.

Lets post Pix of our Manajarensis this fall and see where we stand.

i guess it depends on how much you value a minimum of 10+ years time.....the older i get, the bigger cycads i buy. :)

which would put on three feet of trunk quicker....the Manajarensis or the nubimontanus?

That might be a closer race than you think.... :)
