On Friday night my husband & I went to a well known discount BB to look at water filters. While there we stopped at their "stocked by idiots for the gullible" plant nursery. While we wandered through, my husband looked at a shelf and said, "Did you see these 'Mexican' palms?"

"Probably Washingtonias," I said.

"No. These are pinnate," he answered. My husband, while not the palm afficionado I am, has learned a lot.

I looked. "What the...?" Which gave him immense glee. The price for a 3g triple was cheap so I grabbed one, which actually turned out to be $2 less than cheap.

On Saturday I separated the 3 palms and gave them their own 3g pots. So, I ask, What are these "Mexican" palms? I have some thoughts but will leave it to all of you to sort out - what fun! Here come the photos.

Looks like Meg buys her cars in Mexico. Falcon, Mustang, T Bird.

Kris, Look at them old Fords! :mrlooney:

Those palms should be about 10 cents each in this economy. :rage:

They are in no way from Mexico. :(

I thought I was going to Astrocaryum mexicana...run that by your husband. :winkie:

What can I say? My husband is a Ford man. The t-bird is hardly old (2002). The other two are no trailer queens. He drives the Mustang to work and makes the Ranchero haul mulch for the palms.

Ken, even a neophyte like me knows those triple palms are no Astrocaryums. No BB would risk a lawsuit if Ed or Edna Geezer or little Tommy Brat gets stuck by a 2-inch spine. My husband is very particular about palm spines. He likes them on Hyphaenes & Livistonas, not on Astrocaryums or Acanthrophoenix. On the other hand, his agaves are known to lash out at anyone passing by.

I knew the bird was "new" but did not notice the Falcon was not a Falcon. That is the original car-truck.

Hooks are fine but don't plant a spine?

Fishtail juice on none of mine?

The Falcon is still made in Australia, although they've just changed it's name last year. The Fairlane was made until 2006. You often see old XP Falcons driving around here.

Millbrook, "Kinjarling" Noongar word meaning "Place of Rain", Rainbow Coast, Western Australia 35S. Warm temperate. Csb Koeppen Climate classification. Cool nights all year round.

Those aren't weeds, those are collectible cars!

Also, Ken, if you're still here, Hudson made a "car-truck" in the 1940's I believe. Full size Ford Ranchero's became available in 1956 or 1957. They were available in Australia well before that, mid 1930's I think. Think how cool you would be hauling a yard of potting soil around in your 1941 Hudson "car-truck"?

this issue of ptychosprema elegans vs. adonidia merrillii IDs is also being hashed out in wolfgangs ("mpiodi") current thread, supporting my theory that these palms are indeed difficult to distinguish from each other, especially at an early age,as in both examples here. :interesting:

If its not a Falcon or a Mustang or T-Bird it must be an Adonidia.

Amusing how they went very far in their mislabeling. Non palm people! Yes I agree with pohonkelapa as for the similar form of A. vs P. when young. Ptychosperma seem to be longer, straighter, and with more serrated leaflets. Those are Adonidia without a doubt, what other palm gets obsessively sold as a triplet? :rage:

I'm glad you took the time to separate them. They are super gorgeous as straight, thick solitary palms under the full sun.

Car truck????? Don't you mean a UTE ? There are still a few of those old Falcon utes getting about here. I had an XC Falcon coupe for while years ago, (same model Mad Max drove) would have been a lovely car if I could have seen over the dashboard ! I think the palms are Ptychospermas. They probably would have sold more if labelled Sth Pacific palms. I recently bought a Licuala grandis, labelled Licuala ramsayii from a big store. I think I came out ahead on that deal.
