Ciczi got me thinking this morning. This Board has way too many men.The existing girls are all beautiful and dynamic. My favorite beautiful, dynamic female posters are the amazing ladies from Europe, who do such incredible work with Palms in tough climates. That stated,my thought is how we generate more beautiful, dynamic Lady posters on this Board?

What do we do? Advertise? Run specials? Give economic incentives? Can our beautiful, dynamic current female Posters give thoughts and recommendations? We need some equilibrium and firm guidance. As you know, we are boys.

Funny how the ratio of men to women is lopsided when it comes to this kind of gardening.

In Megs case she says her husband is not in the grove but I have known some couples that both have a palm hobby. Ari and Scott for example.

Do other garening chat boards have lots of women? Daves for example? What other boards do women post on where they are the majority?

Bubba, even if we don't get the ratio up it is a pleasure of mine to chat with so many people from around the world and more is better. I can only hope that more people take the leap and post here with pictures of thier gardens and to share thier palm experiences from far away places.

BTW Z4 Devil rocks!

I don't think bubba meant Miss Palmiverse, just that women who like palms are especially attractive on a male-dominated forum. Just a guess!

Now thats the right idea beautiful women and palms lets have a contest for ms.palmtalk. :D:D

We may have to ask the Mod if it's OK but we could do a poll. Mr. and Ms. to be fair. Entrants could show pics their gardens and judges (us) could vote in a poll for Mr and Ms PalmTalk. MattyB may have to DSQ himself.

You Guys need periodic reminders in this area. And being a guy I understand. So here goes.

It is important to keep in mind that this is the IPS Forum. And the mission of the IPS (and this Forum) is advancing the education and enjoyment of palms - nothing more. Reluctantly they have agreed to allow an off topic sub forum, but if you read the guidelines it has many restrictions. While those restrictions don't specifically prohibit discussing the relative merits and attributes of the women (or men) of PalmTalk, I am sure the IPS doesn't intend on promoting "The Babes and Hunks of PalmTalk" calenders :) - or even entertain discussions along those lines.

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

The fact remains that we need more beautiful, dynamic women of the calibre that presently exists. Somehow this Board should go out of it's way to promote this goal. This has nothing to do about fellars. It just means we should promote a better ratio. It would be more interesting!

What you look for is what is looking

Well then you need to be more "diplomatic." We curtailed the use of "Ranch Hand" photos and references, because believe it or not, some women don't want to participate in discussions that include assorted pics of scantily clad young women with suggestive comments and emotions of tongues hanging out. That had turned several women off, referring to it as a "good 'ol boys club" mentality.

Just the reference to wanting to recruit more "beautiful and dynamic" women is counter productive. How about trying to appeal to all women, by making them all feel welcome and appreciated. Imagine a female dominated Rose Forum, discussing how to get more handsome men with hair and 6 pack abs to join in. Would that help persuade most guys here to register? :) (Please don't answer that)

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

I am sorry and appologize to any parties offended. In particular,I appologize to Dean for being unintentionally provocative.I believe we have tremendous female posters on the Board and had no intention whatsoever to hurt feelings or promote controversy.

All I stated was it would be interesting to promote more female posters.I believe I am accurate when I state there are more males than females who post.My reference to "dynamic and beautiful" was an intentional compliment to the existing female posters.I still do not understand how this draws references to "six pack abs". To the extent I caused consternation and discontent, once again I humbly appologize.I still believe the goal to be a positive one for the Forum.

No need to grovel Bubba. :) I know your intentions and heart were in the right place. I was only trying to point out that you need to be careful when you start discussing women's looks in a male dominated environment. As you witnessed, the talk trends immediately to suggestions of a contest for Ms. PalmTalk. Women are already under enough pressure to look "beautiful," and don't need to feel that way here.

In addition, expressing a preference for the beautiful and dynamic Europeans, may not have won you many points with our No. American and Aussie ladies. :)

You are correct in that we need more interesting, engaging, and funny ladies around here. But discussing and comparing their beauty is entering a minefield, and is probably not the best strategy to entice more to join in.

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

Dean, I think the use of "beautiful" should be carefully addressed. After all, many members are faceless, for want of a better expression, so the bearing on physical appearance is somewhat subjective. I would give bubba much more credit than to suggest that he thinks 'good-looking' women are in short supply on PalmTalk. That would be a highly provocative suggestion. It is also clear from his many posts, that bubba has a special interest in palms grown in Europe, so again, I think his comments are taken out of context, for want of addressing this subject from the "ground upwards". Let's not muddy "beauty" with "sexuality", as there are many "beautiful" and dynamic men on PalmTalk too. I wouldn't blame bubba for feeling as he's had salt rubbed in his wounds, especially after he apologized already.

Jean-bernard,

You are forgetting global, cultural differences.

As Dean mentioned, OHANA NUI is really just tolerated, kindly allowing Palm-talkers to "kick back" with each other once in a while. It may have run its course, but getting a topic such as this locked is not going help matters, so I trust you are kidding, Jean-bernard! We need more female members, preferably engaging like the ones we have already, but then I suspect this is a natural attribute of any woman who joins PalmTalk. They come here to discuss palms on an "even playing field" and that's the beauty of it.

I wish to make a couple of things very clear.

Bubba is one of our finest and most involved members. And he is correct in his premise that more women members would be a plus. The ratio is extremely lopsided. So there is no need for him to feel chastised.

At the same time, to use his words, "we are boys." And when "boys" discuss women, especially in a topic that emphasizes "beautiful" no less than five times in the title and post, the inevitable direction of the topic is cast. And my job is to steer things away from topics that can create controversy (other than Dypsis IDs). Enough said.

So I'll attempt to steer this topic back in the direction that I think Bubba intended. How can we attract more women to PalmTalk? Or should that question be expanded to explore why more women aren't involved and interested in palms in general - and how to address that?

Feel free to start a new topic in the main forum and come at this worthwhile topic from another direction.:)

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.
