Hello to all,

I live in Miami, Fl. Interested in planting some Igunaura's to create a nice lower level of coverage to a certain area of my yard.

Of those of you who have experience with this palm, what would be my greatest challenges if I so choose to move forward ?

Really appreciate any advice.

Manny, I'd plant a grove of these! Mulch heavily & some shade outta do it. My wallichiana went thru this past winter without a scratch, while it's neighboring Licualas took a crap. In fact, it suprised me by opening pink leaves even on the coldest days. :D

Manny,

I think you can grow these, you'll just have to amend your soil there some if you have the typical sand, limestone and high pH. I'm having good success at the yard. I have a large I. spectabalis (I. wall. var. major), I. wallichiana and I elegans all growing in good shade, black, rich top soil and plenty of water. The key is the soil.

Manny, I have an Iguanura wallichiana I got from Floribunda in 2008 and planted in my shade garden in the backyard. It survived this last winter - to my great surprise - and seems to be doing great. I will take photos over the weekend. It is shielded from winds and late day sun by my Pinanga coronata and Dypsis cabadae. I haven't had any luck with any other Iguanuras, even potted, but would love to have more of them. Other than this one, they seem too fragile to survive culture by me.

Gang,

Thanks for the responses. Especially from the Florida members; No doubt I am encouraged !!

Jeff, your soil is probably a little better than mine, so no doubt I have to do some amending. As a matter of fact, i have my guys digging up a nice big hole where these babies will go. I will keep it as acidic as possible.

Also, glad to see that they don't seem to be affected by the cold, hopefully we won't be experiencing this type of weather for another 50 years !!!!!!

Andrew, This one's been in the ground for almost 4 years. I never amended the soil & it's doing fine, but then again it's not Miami.

Anyone had good luck growing these in san diego. I have deep shade under a Monterey pine with highly acidic soil. Any thoughts?
