I picked up a really nice Cocothrinax, ID'd as fragrans, but whatever it is, I've never seen it before, and it's nice.

Check it out . . . .

I have 2 C. fragrans but although they look healthy they just dont do anything. After 4 years I repotted them, just for something to do, and they grew about 3 cm, then stopped again. I germinated a lot of C. spissa seedlings last year too but they are still tiny one strap wonders. :( This must be another genus that just doesnt like me.

I think Cocco. fragrans is also a synonym for another, more common variety. Apparently, the flowers are quite nice smelling. I have one but it hasn't flowered yet.

Peachy, Coccothrinax have a well-deserved reputation for being slow but I think you'd get better/faster growth if you put them in the ground. They don't make good potted palms unless you want to intentionally "bonsai" one. They also want plenty of heat and sun. This is one of my favorite genera and I have at least a dozen species in the front yard. I need to make a photo essay of them to post, maybe when most of the cold damage has grown out. Tough but elegant little palms.

This morning I took photos of my C. fragrans. Shows evidence of past winter damage but is growing strong. This is one of the more "lax" species.

Speaking of slow growing, just how slow is that? I have a few C.crinita (the old guy) in gal pots that don't seem to be in any hurry to get out. I don't want to put them in the ground because they'll get lost in the weeds and vines.

Love the leaves on your palm. Just wondering if my trees will be grown by mid-century.:(:hmm::blink:

Do they have fan leaves yet? They will grow "faster" in the ground. This is not a palm that likes being confined in pots. I'd pull some weeds, plant them then mulch heavily around them to keep the weeds at bay. They want lots of sun & heat, water too if they have good drainage. But they'll never go anywhere in a 1g pot.

Thanks Meg,

I will set them free. I have a couple more Cocos; don't know what species tho. Maybe they all would like to live together; just cleared a spot that may be just what the doctor ordered. :D

Hi Meg,

Here're a couple photos, first is the Cocothrinax crinita and the second is Cocothrinax sp. (I need a species name, anybody got one?)

I grew the crinita from seed I got in 2005 and the other sp. was given to me a year ago, it was germinated in 2006. Would be nice to know what species it is. :hmm:
