Well, I don't claim to be an expert, and you know how the palm thing goes... Your at the mercy of the seed source  . I believe I have seen some habitat pics with double trunks. This tree was grown here fm seed that came direct from habitat, the tree is going on 20 yrs old, and its been double trunked from a very young age... The leaves are distinctly different than the other species I have observed in person ( coriacea / thebaica / dichotoma ), and FAR more blue (not even close) than any of those, which I believe is correct for Petersiana. I have a young plant from seed fm Fairchilds and I'm am not certain the Fairchild plant is pure or correct, and the seedling is more likely a hybrid itself. The leaves are already looking more like Coriacea and there not fully character yet.

In the end I guess all we CAN do is believe or wonder, unless we picked the seed in habitat ourselves... :D

In any event, based on ALL the Hyphaene I've seen in person this is the MOST Beautiful ( IMO! ) .

I agree. Plus I have heard these are not easy to grow.

That's a great looking palm Dave. H petersiana can split, but it doesn't branch like other Hyphaene. I got two seeds several years ago from Kyle (kylcawazafla, still on the board) and germinated both. One died after a few years, but the other grew OK, but slow. I gave it to Gary Levine as 3g plant, figuring it would like his hot inland climate better, and it's thriving at his place.

Has anyone ever seen a Hyphaene branch above ground in California? I haven't. I know of several larger theibacas but all branch at ground level just like coriacea. I agree yours is quite a nice looking palm.

I wish it was my palm... It belongs to a friend of mine. I have not had the palm sickness for 20 years... yet :D . I do think its the best looking Hypheane I have seen in person, and I actually like that it has not gotten tall. None of the Hypheane I have seen in person have branched above ground.

So far no one has a Hypeane they want to pollinate with it :( . I may have to do a cross with Coriacea...

This post got my Palm juices going again, that thing is gorgeous. Like Matt said, he gave me one a couple years ago and I paid it no mind, didn't know it was that beautiful of a palm but Matt insisted I should grow it. It took a couple years but mine is kicking in now and growing well and I think I better start giving it a little more attention. Thanks for posting that photo, quite beautiful.

Hey Randy,

I would think if they live in Fallbrook, they should do well at your place. The seedling I got is from George ( Palms & Cycads )(Im not confident its pure) but he had a few left when I got it about a yr ago.
