Here is the inflorecence that i plan to pollinate W/ Queen pollen. This XButyagrus has produced seed w/ all the ingredients needed but i was'nt sure if it pollinated itself or a

Queen or Butia pollinated it. I suspect it pollinated itself because when i cleaned the male flowers today it had a boatload of pollen, unlike othe Mules that i have tried to do before. This time i think it will work!

I cracked the seeds open like Matt had informed me to do and was pleasantly surprised to find endocarp, endosperm, and an embryo!

Out of the 20 or so flowering Mules that i have here i have two that do this.

Wish me luck!

Good luck Mark, hopefully they will germinate for you. Do you know if the back-crossing, (ButiaXQueen)XQueen ,has been done before? You would think it would take on an even more tropical look.

Or, how bout a (Butia X Queen) X Parajubaea? That sure would be interesting.

Remember to do a Butia X Syagrus amara once you get pollen!

Hmmm, I like the way your thinking Zeeth, a (Butia X Queen) X Parajubea could be super tropical looking.

Hey Mark, while were at it, I have a request, updated pictures of your Butia X Parajubea and your Butia X Cocos, please

Mark, I had the same idea a few weeks ago. I have seeds up on the Butiagrus (#1 pic) using pollen from this thick trunked S. rom. (#2 pic)

Hi, Matt:

Charlie Raulerson produced [butia X Queen] X Queen. This was a particularly attractive PLUMOSE hybrid. Ted Waas gave me another [butia X Queen] X Queen which I gave to Kanapaha Bot Gdn. Ted's plant wasn't as clearly in this heritage; it disappeared at such an early age that it was difficult to say much except that it was somewhat plumose. We've been eagerly awaiting for all these years another [butia X Queen] X Queen. Our best wishes TO ALL in producing another plumose F2 hybrid.

We'd be very grateful if someone would post Charlies [butia X Queen] X Queen. I can email it to any kind volunteer!

Best Wishes,

merrill

Zeeth,

If i could get my hands on some Parajubaea pollen i would do that cross in a heartbeat!

Also, when my S.Amara flowers i will do that cross too for sure! I am happy to see that it survived this past brutal winter.

Matt,

Thank you for telling me to use my vise w/ cracking seeds, it worked fantastic. I'll post some updated pics for you of the palms that you requested soon.

Also, keep your fingers crossed for this to work, i plan to send a few seeds to you and other ggod friends when they ripen!

Scott,

Does your XButyagrus produce seed on it's own? Your two selected palms will make some beautifull hybrids if successfull! Good luck! Keep us updated w/ pics as your seed grow.

Merrill,

The picture of Dr. Charles Raulerson and his hybrid BXQXQ has allways stuck in my memory, and i have allways wanted to do this cross but i have waited for the perfect specimen Mule to use. I now have a fertile XButyagrus to use as the parent palm.

On my profile you can e-mail me the pic and i will gladly post it for you!

While its all too technical and time consuming for me to attempt it, I had always wanted a mule palm. After many years, I got one just a couple of weeks ago as a birthday gift. I doubt if the really complicated crosses will reach these shores in a hurry. I have tried for years to get a red triangle. Last year I managed to find a Hyophorbe lag x vers, which is a bit disappointing so far but it may improve with age. Good luck with the experimentation.

Can not get the photo to upload of the Mule. But on a good note the butia x syagrus x syagrus spent all winter out doors in the pacific northwest with no damage. We did have a mild winter on the island though.

Good question Scott,

I would imagine that they would look very simular. How many seeds did you get when your inflorescence (SXButiagrus) ripened?

Cool stuff guys,,, keep em coming!

Peachy,

Thank you for the best wishes, when i get some ripe seeds i'll send you some if you like!

Mark,

I removed around 90% of the inflorescence off of the S.rom. ( to far off the ground for my liking). I got 6 seed to ripen and 4 to germinate.

Good luck Mark, any chance of some photos showing the process involved

That would be lovely, thanks Mark. Would you like 2 or 3 thousand queen seedlings and a couple of tons of seeds ? I had to get a couple of my big queens removed recently, the mess from the seeds and seedlings overtaking the place was too much to cope with, but I did keep my 5 other big ones. I am still dancing on the ceiling with glee over my mule palm, keep finding new places to plant it !

I am going to try this S.rom.X Butia with S.rom. pollen this weekend.

Good to hear of your plans and sucesses!--- I cleaned my first 2 inflouresces today--- I haope to produce a few crosses this year---- The fecundity of the pollen is a big issue Mark--- It is fantastic that you are doing the basic research to get the right pollen and technique. All my Butyagrus shoot blanks but I still have a couple that may amoutn to something.

Good luck and keep us informed!

Best regards

Ed

This is a palm that should be more available .....there are scores of large mules around....why are people not backcrossing with queens to get a true 8b or 9a queen lookalike. I would love to have one.

there almost all sterile thats the main reason ---- I have them all over my yard and they regularly dump seeds ----- I would have seen a seedling by now
