A friend and I have been discussing C thouarsii. Ive been growing this plant (from seed obtained from the Cycad Society seedbank) for many years now. It burns somewhat in freezes but grows quickly and carries a beautiful top from April or May through the first freeze.

I have it growing next to an east facing wall under the partial canopy of a King Palm. It is tightly surrounded by other plants in an effort to raise the relative humidity.

Is anyone else growing this plant? Please post your experiences and pictures!

I grow them.... that is why I suggest you move them to somewhere you have more room.... They get to be big cycads and not that slow....

I've got a few as well Glenn and my experience is similar. They don't want full sun, will burn in a frost, but can handle temps below freezing. Mine has experienced 27F and only the exposed leaves were slightly scorched by frost. It puts out one or two really killer sets of leaves a year and is a beauty. Here is a picture of one of mine from the other night. It's just finishing a flush.

I've got a couple seedlings going right now that are hybrids, Cycas thoursaii X cairnsiana and C. thoursaii X cupida. This is an extremely fast growing cycad, the fastest I've ever seen and has a blue tint to it. Here's a picture, notice the petiole you can see where the blue color was rubbed off. I have very high hopes for this hybrid to be a stunner. I took a risk and planted this in full sun and so far only the oldest leaf has burned.

Urban Rainforest Palms,Cycads and Exotics. Were in San Diego Ca. about 5 miles from the beach on Tecolote canyon. It seems to be an ideal growing climate with moderate temps. and very little frost. Vacation Rental in Leilani Estates, big island Hi PM me if interested in staying there.

Hi Ari,

I'd love to plant one out in some open space but without good protection I'm afraid i'd lose them in my cold winter. Ive seen massive plants in pictures...if mine ever get anywhere close to that size it'll have to be crowded in tight space with plenty of cold proction.
