Two Long-Established Gardens

In San Clemente, California

Mark your calendars to visit two marvelously mature gardens, with big plants you don't often see.

San Clemente is a picture-book paradise. The graceful curve of the California Riviera coastline shows off the sapphire sea beneath an azure sky. The coastal climate is perfect for palms from Lord Howe and New Caledonia.

The Bob de Jong Garden

119 Avenida Dominguez

San Clemente, CA 92672

Garden phone: 949-338-3035

Mr. de Jong started his garden in 1978. It has matured into one of the most magnificent palm gardens in Southern California.

That year, Mr. de Jong planted a Hedyscepe canterburyana, which is now a total of thirty feet tall, with about 9 feet of trunk. It stands tall in full golden sun.

Mr. de Jong added many other exceptional plants over the years. A few examples include: a "Foxy Lady" hybrid between Vetichia arecina and Wodetya, with 10 feet of trunk; a Dypsis onilahensis with 6 feet of trunk; a Chambeyronea houilu with 10 feet of trunk; a Chambeyronea macrocarpa with 6-7 feet of trunk, which is flowering; and a Rhopalistylus sapida "Chatham Island" with 5 feet of trunk.

Other specimens, among many more include: Burretokentia hapala, kongihensis, and veillardii; Dypsis plumosa; Rhopalistylus baueri ; Veillonia alba; and Cyphokentia .

Mr. de Jong also has some very nice Howea forsteriana -- with 30 feet of trunk!

The Rick Luna Garden

114 W. Paseo de Cristobal

San Clemente, CA 92672

Garden phone: 949-492-3208

Mr. Luna, a professional landscaper, started his garden in 1987 when he purchased his house and lot. The property was already graced with a number of mature King Palms, planted during the 1950s. Over the course of the last 23 years, Mr. Luna added many more.

One of the most spectacular is a Chambeyronea macrocarpa "Watermelon" planted in 1993, which now has 20 feet of clear trunk.

But that's not all. Mr. Luna's garden has 12 Howea forsteriana, with 30 feet of trunk. In full sun, of course.

Other wonderful specimens include: Basselinia gracilis, with 7 feet of trunk; Dypsis leptocheilos with 12 feet of trunk; Euterpe edulis, with 12 feet of trunk; Hedyscepe canterburyana with 5 feet of trunk; Cyphophoenix elegans, no trunk, but 11-12 feet tall; and an Actinokentia divaricata with 2 feet of trunk.

Other palms include: Ptcyhosperma macarthurii and elegans, Veitchia arecina, Dypsis onilahensis, and many more.

So, mark your calendar for the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Come to the PSSC meeting and feast your eyes on the wonderful Luna and de Jong gardens! Bask in the sunshine of friendship and the shared love of palms.

There will be an auction at this meeting! The auction is an important source of funding for the PSSC, which provides funds for the publication of our world-renowned Palm Journal.

Auction proceeds are split as follows: 50% to the "vendor" (you) and 50% to the PSSC. You may, if you like, donate all your auction proceeds to the PSSC.

Pay with cash or check.

Potluck Lunch:

Main meat course provided, plus paper plates and eating utensils. Bring your favorite dish to share on a buffet-style table.

Not sure what to bring? If you like it, bring it! The rest of us will like it, too!
