My only Cycas cairnsiana flushed recently. I love its powdery blue leaves! It is the plant that attracts the first attention from visitors. Is seed of this species ever offered for sale? I would love to get my hands on some. Are there any similar Australian blues?

In my opinion, far nicer than cairnsiana is calcicola.

These Cycas are not the easiest to grow here in SoCal. The best ones I have seen are inland where it is hot, but also where it does not freeze each winter.

Calcicola is nice for sure. Are seeds or seedlings available?

I do have a few Cycas cairnsiana plants growing in the garden here. Their new flush of growth is very blue in color but eventually they lose the blue and become mostly green. Maybe in a climate with less humidity the blue lasts longer, I'm not sure. What are others experiences with this species? A pic of one in the garden . . .

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

I have a few C. Cairnsiana's in pot. I keep them in a greenhouse all together at the same place. I have grown them from seeds..But you can see difference. Some are very blue other do have more green in it..What should be the reason of that?

here's one of them...a blue one
