Cycad overload  Beauties Gileno.

Matt in Temecula, CA

Hot and dry in the summer, cold with light frost in the winter. Halfway between the desert and ocean

Wow Gileno! You have an incredible collection of cycads.I am trying to acquire more.I have E.ferox, ituriensis, laurentianus and hillebrantii and an unknown Encephalartos I posted pics of recently.I have a large Cycas angulata at the beach and it does well.Zamia furfuracea do really well.My Zamia spinulosum need lots of shade and are not so great looking-I have some of the more tropical Zamias I plan to try in my highland garden which has shade and great soil.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Posted

Ah Gileno - you hav so many wonderful cycads and I have just three (including two dozen C. revoluta - which are so slow they may as well be plastic). I fear I will not be able to look at them again after seeing your photographs.

Thanks. I wish I had nice cycad nurseries around here, like you lucky California cycad admirers.

Hi Kumar. My collection started with Cycas revoluta too. We have to be a little more patient with cycads, comparing to palms. In the early days I was not using a fast draining medium and still had a tendency of overshading (overshadowing?) my cycads too. These are very rewarding and fascinating plants, sisters to palms but with a proper biological clock, expanding in cicles. You`re lucky to have several nice native cycad species occuring in India and your climate sounds perfect for most species, if controlling the drainage and humidity. Some of them might even have a better participation in cultivated landscape, in the future. Namaste.

Neat one, isn`t it, Ari...Let`s see how it develops, under 70% shadecloth. Sometimes I think I should protect them more, what do you think? Btw, I`d appreciate comments on growing Macrozamia here too, from aussie experts. It`s probably the genus I still get the highest mortality rates here as seedlings. Maybe I should expose them more and add more sand in the mixture, reduce the waterings...or is it a pH issue?

Great photos Gileno!!!

G`day Kurt,

Wish I had a nice forest in the backyard, to plant down a few lovely shaded Bowenias and Lepidozamias, like some folks I know of...

Sorry Scott, almost missed your post...Cycas angulata is one of my favs too and seems to be the easiest australian native for cultivation in my climate (I`ve killed several C. cairnsiana and media in the past). You`re lucky to grow E. ituriensis and laurentianus...in pictures, they seem to be impressive massive cycads, easily adaptable to tropical coastal conditions. I`d love to see photos of all your babies too.
