Clean out the fireplace, and dump ashes around the palms.

Had four buckets like this full of ashes, Shoe for scale.

Dump around teh palms.

Those four buckets only took care of half my palms.

Ashes are great, but be careful and don't use too much at one time; they can raise the pH quite easily. I always either use them in moderation, use them only where I need to raise the pH, or compost them first, which lowers the pH. But they are great as fertilizer! And then there is the Biblical "ashes to ashes to fertilizing palm trees"; that must be in there somewhere.

Since I´m using it every year on my Sabal mexicana´s they do not show yellowing of the older fronds anymore and are growing very well. This year I put it also at the side of the washies that shew signs of Potassium deficiency. I think it will work also. For Braheas, that like alkaline soils, i´m using it also...

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

 

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!
