Great thread Paul! I grew up in a maritime town of Manitowoc that made subs during WWII. They have one of them on display for tours, the USS Cobia. I know what you mean about the tightness of the space. I was amazed at how they use every nook and cranny. I also remember them having a distinct smell of must and gun/engine oil.

I've been on Cutty Sark too!

Classic ship! I lived near Greenwich for a while, so it was probably 1996 when I visited the Cutty Sark. May 2007 saw a fire that caused extensive damage at the start of the current restoration work. Apparently, someone left an industrial vacuum cleaner on over the weekend and 2 security guards were sacked for not spotting the fire 'cos they had their feet up! A photo diary at the Cutty Sark website shows some earlier restoration work: http://www.cuttysark...j&pageId=689964
