I miss my Pinangas! Thanks for posting all the great photos. Virginia Beach, Virginia expects 6 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. We are zone 8B and this is the 4th snow this season for a city that usually is snow free. I wish we were in Puerto Rico with our Pinangas, but are glad they aren't facing extinction outside in Virginia tonight! At least I do have 49 seedling cacao (chocolate) trees in the greenhouse so I can pretend to be in the tropics... Merry Christmas!

OK update on TGD's mystery pinanga ...

"Pinanga species "kanchanaburiensis"UNDERSTORY PALM

is what the current ebay listing says ..

details ..'This Pinanga was initially thought to from Sarawak. It was sold as P.sarawakensis.It has never been found in Sarawak despite extensive palm botanising .It is now thought to originate in the northern province of Kanchanaburi having been found there by a well known Thai collector. He has tentively named it Pinanga kanchanaburiensis.Essentially its a beautiful mottled pinanga that holds its mottle into adult life. Its broad leaflets become narrow as pictured. The trunks are 2-3cm in diameter and it reaches 1.5metres in height.Coming from northern Thailand should allow this palm to be grown in subtropical areas.'

I have several of these , still not planted any out :hmm:

How slack is that , if there is a break in the constant heavy showers i will try and find a little shade somewhere for a few .

i planted mine out about six months ago in quite heavy shade. Although the mottling was there, it was very faint so i trimmed back a couple of alex fronds and a euodia tree and the mottling seemed to come back more in the mature fronds once more light was available. It will be interesting to see how it goes after the cyclone destroed every bit of shade in my yard

If you don't plant them soon.... I might steal them off you :mrlooney: . I think I need to get some of these.... The good doctor still has them.

Harry,

Set up temporary shade.... you don't want them to burn.

Check out this grouping of P. caesia, well over 30' tall. Just a tad higher than the description in Riffles book. mrlooney.gif Taken a few days ago at Waimea Valley on Oahu.

Lovely Pinangas!!!! My husband just got back from a week on our farm (not that I'm JEALOUS or anything...) and took NO Pinanga photos at all! Wait until April and I'll take several shots of each one even if they only have 2 leaves!

For any interested Aussie Pinanga fans , I saw a Pinanga chaiana on that popular internet auction site . Looks like The Good Doctor has finally got seed set on the colony . Finally found the pic i took a few years ago , these are approx 3m tall , Hydriastele cariosa and a big Pentagonia mixed in there with all sorts of other goodies

Anyone up for a bidding war ?
