January, 2011 Palm Society of Southern California Meeting and Banquet

Saturday, January 15, 2011

In San Diego's Balboa Park

Do not miss this one!

The PSSC is holding its annual banquet and its January 2011 meeting in one of the best palm parks around.

It's all here: convenient free parking; easy walking distance to a great palm garden; and, for those so inclined, the Flight and Space Museum and Hall of Champions.

Tours: Meet at the back of the seating area of the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park, which is just north of the parking lot. Meet at 10:00 AM and choose from one of two tours, one of which will be in Palm Canyon and the other in the desert garden. Each tour will last approximately one hour and then switch and go on the other. We are planning on four tour guides that are very familiar with both areas so we can try to keep the groups to a manageable size. We will have a species list available for everyone.

The food is being catered by one of the best in San Diego and is wonderful, come hungry! The menu is Polynesian and will include the following:

- Fresh Caesar Salad

- Coconut Chicken with Mango Salsa

- Kahlua Pork

- Hawaiian Rice

- Baby Carrots & Peas

- Mango Salsa

- Hors D'oeuvres, including Coconut Shrimp & Beef Kabobs

- Huge Cake buffet

- Gourmet Coffee Station

- Water, Iced Tea, Lemonade

- Hawaiian Rolls

Jack Sayers will present a talk and slide show of the 2010 International Palm Society Biennial in Brazil

Following the program there will be an auction.

Cost of the banquet this year is $42.

Payments/reservations, payment constitutes a reservation, need to be received by Alan Brickey by January 5.

Payments by check or credit card information.

I would like to remind everyone interested in attending the banquet to sign up by January 5th. IE: ASAP! We need to get a head count to the caterer so they can make preparations.

I've come out of palmtalk retirement to pimp this event... We have some great volunteers, like Jim Wright, who are going to show everyone the fantastic palms in Balboa Park. Don Martin shopped around for a very good caterer, and the food is going to be top notch. Don Hodel is going to give a talk on Red Palm Weevil. Lindsey and I are going to talk about Brazil, and we have a lot of photos of palms in habitat. On top of that, it will be an opportunity to talk about our favorite subject with a bunch of other palm lunatics!

Come to the banquet!

Great food, schmoozing galore, even with some coconut entrees (at elHoagie's insistance :)) come and see and be seen, and learn about Jack's trip to the Biennial and the Red palm Weevil from Dr. Hodel.

Banquet, tomorrow, be there, be square, sit in a chair, on your butt hair, eat some food, see some palms, BS Man says he'll streak through palm canyon so you can't miss that white ball of fire.

I've lost about 10 pounds since the Mardy tour so it will be a smaller ball...
