Palm tree guessing game! Just for fun

Recommended Posts

I just thought it would be fun to play a "guessing game" for this palm! It is growing at the visitor center to the NTBG in Kauai.

It sure feels like it's from New Caledonia. I wanna say Cyphophoenix elegans but I just know that's not right. It just looks like it with those stiff leaflets w/ wide spacing.

It looks like a Cyphophoeniex balansae..

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

No one has it yet! The only reason I know what it is, is because it had a label. (i blurred it out though - or at least tried to)

Is that from New Calidonia?

I think this part is right....

Chambeyronia lepidota is the only guess that isn't wrong, in my opinion. Very good guess Dean.

No one has the genus yet. Another hint: once it started trunking, it would be much more easy to identify it by a photo of the base of the palm.

Campecarpus...?

I think we have a winner. But someone has guessed the genus Kyle since it is now Cyphophoenix fulcita. :)

Oops! Yes! It is a Campecarpus... I mean Cyphophoenix fulcitus! I wasn't aware of the name change until about 10 minutes ago. I'm sorry if that threw anyone off! I guess I should get my facts straight first.

That was a good one Kyle. One of the better guessing palms in a long time.

I am actually very surprised this palm does not have more notoriety. This is a VERY rare plant! This is the first garden in the US that I now know has this palm. The sad thing is I have been to the NTBG and completely missed it. I wonder if anyone knows the history or story about this plant. How old for example.
