                  Garden’s telephone number 626-495-2125

                  Website www.huntington.org

Let’s start the New Year off with our annual banquet.  At 12:00 noon BBQ chicken, tri tip, green salad, fruit salad, dessert, soda and water will be served.  Limited seating luncheon tickets will be $37 if purchased before January 18, 2007.  Banquet tickets after that date or at the door will be $50.

RSVP to Bud and Jo Zager by telephone (714) 870-0114 and pay at the door.  Without a reservation, the banquet will cost $50.00/person due to catering commitments.

Don Hodel will be the key note presenter on Pritchardias, a project which private PSSC donors and the IPS have assisted in funding.  Don’s presentation will be followed by a travel log presented by Jack and Lindsay Sayer.  A great auction and raffle is planned following the presentations.  Please support this great society by participating in the plant auction and buying many raffle tickets.

As the Garden is large and always full of new surprises, you are encouraged to arrive anytime from 10am for morning self-guided tours.  Admission and parking is free to PSSC members but you must identify yourself as a PSSC member at both guard stations.  First guard post is at the entry from Allen Dr., and the second post is near the main building entrance adjacent to the parking, (Guard Post 17).  The guard will point you in the direction of the Ahmanson Classroom in the Botanical Center for the banquet.

 From the 210 Fwy: East or Westbound.  Exit on Allen Dr. going south.  Allen Dr. will lead to the front gate of the HBG.

From Orange County: Take the 405 or the I-5 North and connect to the 110 Fwy. North toward Pasadena until the freeway ends on Arroyo Parkway.  Continue north on Arroyo Pkwy and turn right onto California Blvd.  On Allen Dr. turn right.  The HBG entrance is one block south.

Well, it sounds official. :(  I have been talking to a few members out there in Southern Calif. over a few months, about flying out there with my wife and being a part of this. We were looking forward to this.I was hoping it was not on this date. Because, I always do a large trade show( TPIE) in Ft. Laud. and have a booth there, I will not be able to attend. That stinks!! :(  Well, I hope there is a good turn-out, and see some pics. when it's all done.

Looks like the championship games are Sunday, the 21st...so...I'm in !

Jeff...I do a trade show every year that's on Super Bowl weekend. You could fire a shotgun down the aisle and not hit anyone. If the Charges are in this year, I'll be P$#@#D !!!

Jeff S.,

a good backup plan might be to attend HIPS' main event: our BBQ in Wailoa River State Park in Hilo on Friday evening Feb 2nd!! :)

Dinner followed by a great auction. No speaker though. At the BBQ in Jan 2006 I believe we had 148 people attending. Considering that HIPS had less than 160 members at the time, that was pretty amazing.

Allright, I'm in.  I called and talked w/ Jo and she said only 3 people have called.  I assume the reason is because the news letter hasn't come out yet and there's no reservation info on our PSSC site.  So, spread the word.

Leland offered me a LARGE sum of money to dance at the banquet.  I can't discuss the amount, but let's just say I might have able to purchase a new Washingtonia seedling with the proceeds.  After meditating for several days, I decided that I just can't dance for money anymore, so I was forced to decline the generous offer...

But, I will be modeling MattyB's new line of T-shirts at the event.  These shirts were inspired by my Dominican dancing, and they are SWEEEEEET!!

Bo,

Thanks for your considerations. I appreciate it. But, the fleight, hotel, meals, rental car, gas,etc.etc. might be a little over-kill trying to explain to Pops and my brothers for coming out to a BBQ. :D  Thats a loooooooong way for some chicken and burgers! But, I would love to share time with friends ,stories, and visit all the beautiful gardens that Hawaii has to offer.

I spoke with Bud Zager on the phone yesterday for awhile, what a cool guy.  He says Bo's garden is  "the best palm garden in, well, probably the world."  We talked about canopy, and rookie mistakes with palms (mine, not his), and various species we both admire, and how sometimes on the way home from work, a palm finds its way into your car...   It's funny how you put two palm people together, and suddenly the conversation won't stop.  I hope to meet Bud at the banquet.  He describes himself as a little bald guy in his 70's, not sure how I'll pick him out of the crowd... :;):

And, by the way, he has some tall shade frames for sale; now that his palms are tall enough to form a canopy for his favorite chamaedoreas, he doesn't need them anymore.  Ask him about them if you are in need.  Cool guy.

Question:

I've never been to a meeting or the banquet-I've only met Danny and Phil. How do the auctions work? cash? Checks? credit? Angry spouse?

Thanks,

David,

Cash and checks work for the auction, and I think credit cards are also ok.  There's usually a lot of nice palms from seedlings to 15-gallon size, and always some good deals.
