They vary a lot. It's best to grow from seed and select the fast ones or go to a nursery and chose plants which are clearly growing faster than their siblings.

ambositrae is slow for me ; nowhere near as fast as Dypsis Blackstem (sorry no pics)

Mine just started to seed. Woo hoo! The pic was too big to upload but I'll post later when I can get a smaller sized pic.

Keep us posted when it flowers. Will be interested to see close ups.

Infrafoliar!

Yeah, noticed that too. Guess there might be something to this whole "real" Ambo and not real Ambo thing after all :)

Hi Pete. Thanks for your replies and support. I was also thinking that it was sp. Bef but then I noticed that it was bifurcating above the ground (from the lower mid level of the trunk) and that all the photos I've seen of sp. Bef cluster below the ground. I bought this plant off of Marco Herrero who said that he was certain that it was Ambositrae. He also said that John Dransfield was in his garden and did NOT confirm this as Ambositrae (although he vehemently disagrees with Dr. Dransfield). I'd appreciate anybody's comments that clarify this. Marco's mother plant is truly a spectacular plant and one of the marvels of his garden.

Well Jason, I look fwd to yr next post when you "return with pics" from Marco Herrero's to keep us all "in touch" :) Pete

Where did Marco get his plant? I think it cannot be from the same seed collections as the ambos in circulation as I think you are implying it is second generation. Ambos can look very similar to Bef but suspect it might be the latter. The bifurcating behaviour has no import imo.

cheers

Hey Rich,

I just called Marco. Jeff Searle gave him the plant a long time ago so hopefully Jeff reads this and can comment. In any case, I will go by his farm on Saturday and snap some photos of this and a few more gems :yay: . He seems open that it could indeed be Bef. I should have a Herrero farm update post sometime next week.

Be well,

Jason

Here is a photo that Marco sent me. He reads these posts often and was eager to provide a photo to sort out the taxonomy. I think you guys are right on the Bef Id but I'm sure Ambositrae will continue it's ambiguity (next thread "Ambigsitrae" ? :hmm: ).

Thanks for the pic. I'd say Bef/Slick Willy with some confidence. Trunk colour is quite distinctive and leaflet arrangement a little stiffer than ambo. They are similar palms for sure and growing conditions can deceive though the flowering pattern would not be explained by variation me thinks.

Here are the photos of Marco's mother palm. Marco had a nifty little camera and snapped these on Saturday. What surprised me most about seeing this palm was that it loses much of it's rich white color when young and has a more grey hue to it as it ages.
