Carpoxylon...

Is there any hope at all for these palms up here......please say yes!  The new maps say we have the same zone, so I will obviously assume yes!  LOL.

Great photos Kyle.

Kyle,

Thanks for sharing. I question the date on the tag, or maybe you got it confused somehow on your second post of the Copernicias. Planted in 1978 ? Thats got to  be wrong. Copernicias are not THAT slow, and there are hundreds of them planted that long ago or less that are full size, mature specimans. Maybe someone switch tags on this palm, who knows??

What did you think of the Chihuly exhibits?  I went opening weekend and thought they were amazing set in with the plants.  I should have brought my camera but I didn't want to be slowed down.

You've got to love the Fairchild.

Jeff-

We took the tram for the first time and that is what the tram operator said. I kind of questioned it myself and I should have looked at the tags. I know they are painfully slow. what is your guesstimate from seed for those specimens?

I'm a little surprised the Cape Florida (Key Biscayne) lighthouse has those coconuts.  They aren't native to Florida, and the post-Andrew program at the park was to remove the thoroughly-trashed existing vegetation (largely Casuarina trees) and install native species.  The restoration wasn't perfect (more recent projects gained from the experience), but the park now offers excellent habitat for birds, resident and migratory.  One of the finishing touches, several years ago, was to add some Serenoa repens (saw palmetto) along the beach.

I somehow hadn't heard of the Return of Chihuly.  Gotta visit.

I have listened to many of tour operators through the years at Fairchild, and the Copernicia's he was referring to were probably the much taller Copernicia baileyana, not far from those C. fallaensis in the picture. I know for a fact those C. fallaensis were planted not that long ago, and we have been watching them grow ever since. They are not that slow growing. They were planted as large 10 gallon sized plants, maybe 5 to 6 years ago.

I somehow hadn't heard of the Return of Chihuly.  Gotta visit.

No hurry, it will be at Fairchild for the next six months or so.

Dave -

The park ranger said they planted the coconuts in acknowledgement of the historical coconut plantation on Key Biscayne.
