Palms on Figueroa

Recommended Posts

Sunday is just about the only day a person can go downtown and not encounter heavy traffic. So today I did just that with camera in hand to take a look at palms trees, what else? A beautiful warm winter morning along Figueroa Street [a major north\ south street thru Los Angeles]; I focused on Bunker Hill and then around USC.

Nothing too special; just the usual palms that seem to do so well in California

Always surprised that caryota are planted since they die of old age much faster than most palms

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Already past their winter flowering, ornamental pears make a lush garden

079.jpg

The pears appear to be Pyrus kawakamii, the Taiwanese "evergreen" (not quite) species that puts on a beautiful show in February in Southern California. Up here in San Francisco it doesn't bloom much.

A common street tree, the pyrus kawakamii start to produce blossoms around Christmas as if Spring has already arrived!
