Please advise if and where I can purchase a large plant. A quick internet search seems to yield only small plants suitable for mail-order. Retail or wholesale, a 24" box plant would be the ideal size, anywhere in California or southern Oregon. Thanks !

Cistus Nursery was the only place I could find that had them. They might be a bit out of your driving range however.

Did you check with Suncrest Nurseries in Watsonville? They may have the largest ones around.

Darold,

Somona Horticulture just this side of Sebastopol has large Michelias of many different varieties. By far the most extensive collection of species and size I've seen anywhere.

Suncrest is holding most of its Michelia-type Magnolias for production.

Steve and Keith, thanks, but the website inventory for Sonoma Horticultural is out of date. The nursery now has only 1-gallon plants.

Jason, please translate ! Do you mean that they have the plant, but not for sale at this time ? Thanks !

I have had no success finding a large plant, and have obtained only 1 gallon starts. I will pay a finder's fee of $100 to the person who can connect me to a source selling a bigger plant. Thanks !

Darold,

I can find you one, about 6 feet tall in a 15g. And, no "finders fee" for you my friend. Call me.

Try some of the Asian supermarkets. They carry different Michelias sometimes. Down here at least. Ranch 99 always has stuff like this. This is where I've found good deals on M. champaca alba.

Sommer Wholesale (805-238-4245) near Paso Robles used to carry M. maudiae. It's not in their current availability list but may worth a call since that list is not new. They have Manglietia insignis as an alternative, $225 for a 24" box.

The mother lode of a lot of these newly introduced Chinese magnolias is Piroche Plants in British Columbia, Canada (604-465-7101). They have many exotic species that are now all lumped into magnolias: Michelia, Manglietia, Parakmeria, and Tsoongiodendron. I know Suncrest got its stock plants from them so it is possible to import from Canada, but I have no idea what kinds of paperwork/permit/certificate are required. It may not be worth it for just one plant.
