Eucalyptus deglupta - Rainbow Euc. - Mindanao Gum

Recommended Posts

A few people have requested that I bring them some Eucalyptus deglupta to the PSSC meeting this weekend. If anyone is interested let me know. I haven't posted these as for sale for a while because I can't seem to get them up to any size before people swoop in and buy them up, including people driving all the way down from the bay area :) . These are just so difficult to find for sale anywhere. I'm almost finished potting up the last of the seedlings into 5 gallons and moving them out into the sun, so I figure I'd let you guys know, because when these are gone there's no more. Most of them are smallish and sun acclimating to some degree or another, but they're growing strong and healthy. I'm sure others who have bought these from me will attest that these are vigorous, trouble free growers.

3 & 5 gallon pots: $20 each.

The one I got from you is doing great here in Corona, CA! I had a low into the upper 20's f. and it didn't get burned at all.

It's in my shade house. I also have had a high temp of 113f. also no problem.:D

Hey Matt--

Did you ever hear from the guy at Cal State Long Beach? I passed the info along to him; he seemed really interested. Hopefully he'll get back to you and has some $$$...

Not even the snowfall we had here several weeks ago can stop this plant. I did lose some leaves from the 60mph wind gusts along with the snow and hail, but it still looks good. can't wait for spring to get it into the ground.

That's good to know Eric. If you can grow it, it's gotta be a winner.

Just curious, how does this plant do in FL? I was at at garden sale a couple weeks ago and a vendor had 2-3 dozen in pots for sale, maybe 4-5' tall. I can't remember what he wanted - not a lot I think - but I've never seen them for sale here before.

I bought one from Matt 2 weeks ago, and planted it the same day. I pot-planted it with the bottom cut out. Except for right after planting it, I haven't had to water with all this rain. Looking forward to seeing it take off.

Meg,

Re: how they would do in Fla, I saw some beautiful specimens in Rio at the biennial so they can take humidity, and as the others have attested they can handle extremes. I see no reason for them to not flourish in Florida

Quinnpalms,

The Sports Arena Blvd. trees are probably the largest and most well known. They're a bit lackluster in appearance due to unirrigated avenue planting maybe. They're around in private gardens and they always look awesome! I've attached a pic below of one we saw a couple of weeks ago in Mission Hills San Diego.

Oh yeah, I forgot, these are at the SD Zoo entrance. They're huge. I love how the open crowns meld well together when planted close. The spacing on these are no more than 8 or 10 feet apart and the work really well together. I'm trying to copy this planting at home.

actually matty,

I did leave them out when it snowed. they were a little bit protected underneath a 25 gallon sized reclinata, but i did shake snow off of them in the morning, we probably got about 2" of snow on the ground. It stuck for about 2 hours before the rain melted it away, I lost

a lot of leaves, but they've already started to grow new ones. So I'm not really hyping your trees, they just seem to be real solid!

I'm gonna detach 3 propagations from the mother tree as soon as I get some more perlite to pot up. They usually need about 2 weeks to a month in the greenhouse for them to either die or before I can tell that they have rooted out and are a "go". Soon, soon....

I've still got a few left that are up to size and ready to plant out. Several people that had asked me to save them plants have flaked out, so snatch them up if you want them, I'm getting down to the last of them with no new batches coming up after this.

Update July 2011

The last of my Eucalyptus deglupta are up to size and completely rooted out in their 3 & 5 gallon pots and ready to be planted out or potted up. They are actually getting hard to take care of and keep watered in pots because of the hot weather. They are longing to go in the ground where they can spread there roots and take off. :hmm: uh you know what I mean. Put one in the ground now and with some water and fertilizer you'll have a tree overhead by the end of Summer. So, I'll be around this weekend if you wanna stop by and pick one up.

$20 each

Matt - I have a question about "selling out." At what point, or how, do you decide, finally, that you are going to "discontinue" a particular type of plant? As opposed to growing more for a next batch?

I'm having trouble determining how to do this - Some are obvious, such as the non-sellers, but I can't imagine your Euc's are slow sellers.

Jude, I'm not a nursery so I don't know how that business works. The stuff I ocassionally sell here are just extras from hobby germination. I got one batch of Eucalyptus deglupta seed a few years ago and after giving a bunch away to my friends, planting a few, and selling a few, I'm just now down to the last ones. If kept in small pots they just stay tiny small in suspended animation and I've just been potting them up as I get more space out in my sun area.

Frankly I hate growing stuff in pots and would never want to attempt to grow stuff just to sell it. Ficus dammaropsis and Eucalyptus being the exceptions to that. They're just too special to prune off without propagating or to just let die so I keep trying to offer them for sale to those who want them.

Our first-planted on mainland Spain flowered this year, only its second season in the ground, 2.5 years from germination.

Wow, flowering already! My largest one is about 12 feet tall now but it struggles with the dry conditions down in the canyon and attacks from the gophers. I've got the irrigation project moving closer and closer to getting some drippers set on it but not just yet. It'll have to suffer through another year probably. It's a testament to how tough this rainforest tree can be though.

The San Diego Zoo has the tallest I’ve seen this weekend they are just SE on road across from Panda Exibit.   I just stumbled across them and forgot to take pics!

I planted a 1 ga Seedling 2 yrs ago, and it is now 13-15 Ft tall.  Growing as fast as my Brazilian Fern Tree.   It’s a Rocket, but I never intended to plant it, was gonna get it going and give to someone.  Now I’m not sure what to do, except let it go I guess.  Hope my neighbor doesn’t complain in 5 yrs haha

We ended up with two on our garden lot a few years later. Lost both in Hurricane Irma in 2017. My husband insisted on replacing the larger even though the nursery employee told us they don’t play well with hurricanes. Darn things scare me to death now. Just a matter of time till next major hurricane.
