Palm heel

If it is an established palm, past the three gallon or so, size then it should be fine.

I have seen palms that had their boots and heels removed, accidentally or otherwise, and were healthy afterwards but perhaps less sturdy. They were victims of a fast heavy mower and wayward driver at a garden tour.

It wasn't me by the way.

One thing I recently started wondering….  What happens if you are out weeding and you hypothetically, accidentally step on the heel, breaking the pointy end off???  (Asking for a friend)

So funny I’ve thought this as well . Check this out we got a cane corso puppy last year my 15 gallon potted dypsis with heels all got chewed down . Didn’t cause any issues . Actually my big dypsis jurassic (prestoniana) she knocked over and chewed everything damn near beheaded it . Luckily plant completely grew out of it nice full head of hair . And pup is over the chewing finally

I’m very late to this. Yes, generally many palms with a heel will suffer even if you break the point off. All depends on the species and age- some will die and most will die if the entire heel is destroyed before the palm has a chance to form a solid root system. Have lost some special palms to heel damage due to hired help but that’s part of the risk with non-palm specialists working in your garden 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
