What to do when palms give just too damn much shade...

Off Alondra Blvd, E/O Bellflower Blvd. I dunno-- maybe pruned this way because:

(1) Just too damn shady from that (formerly) prodigious canopy

(2) Palm Sunday was just here

(3) Trimmer found a new transfer station that wants palm waste

(4) Gets paid by the frond

Must have run out of time/room to finish pruning these:

Perhaps they just don't know any better. But I know what they're thinking, "If we do a really good job and prune it back severely -- then we won't have to prune them again for a long time."

I like how they pruned the washie on the right. I would think that removing it altogether would make more sense.

Our local power company isn't a fount of tree-based wisdom.

I had a volunteer Washie near my front pole, and it grew up into the wires, and morons with the bucket just gave it a haircut, but didn't behead it.

I called them a few times, and they finally did it. That also got rid of the leaves tangling up in the wires, so my crew and I could down the rest of it.

Well, I think, and we all have the right to our opinions...it is a different look for a palm, of course...but maybe palms occasionally just need a dramatically different look so they can gain a more positive attitude about themselves. Who is to say this Shape Redefinement won't assist their Inner Palm Spirit (IPS) to accept life alterations in a more mellow and nurturing manner, as just one of many paths in life? As humans, we cannot judge Life with a SpearTop to be good, nor bad, it just...is. Palms, like us, must just be accepting of who we are today on our journey to where we can be. If trimming helps palms fulfill themselves holistically that way, isn't it worth the initial pain? I am sure we all share that pain with each and every palm Brother and Sister. And we need to applaud the courageous arborists who are enhancing our palm brethren to experience all of life.

After all, this is Southern California. Need I say more?

Not to mention the property owners are obviously very serious wack jobs, in addition to being incredibly horticulturally challenged. For those of us in more temperate climates, we work hard enough to grow palms; seeing palms that mangled is disgusting.

If somebody ever showed up around my neighborhood wanting to trim like this...I will offer to use my chainsaw to trim their head down to one thin spear, one neuron wide. If they have a neuron.
