Ah, the smell of Acephate in the morning

Howdyall:

As some of you may have read from time to time, I've recommended acephate to kill those sucky insects that we love to hate so much, like thrips, scale, psyllid, etc.

It turns out that acephate, which used to be the active ingredient in Ortho's infamous Orthene and Isotox bug killers has been banned in California.

Acephate is the best bug killer; it kills almost everything on plants. It's a systemic that gets in the tissues, and smites 'em dead. Of course, you can't use it on something you want to eat, or feed to National Velvet, but, because the stuff smells so nasty, it's unlikely anyone would eat oversprayed lettuce anyway. (The smell is nasty; it makes diharrea-spritzed underwear smell almost delightful by comparison.:blink: )

So, PalmTalkers outside California, can you still buy Isotox, or orthene or other preparations with acephate in them where you are?

Just curious.

I believe it's still available here (MD), but I switched to Imidacloprid last year because Acephate wasn't doing the job. Imidacloprid really has no odor (that I can detect, anyway) and works great against scale. Unfortunately it seems to have no effect on spider mites.
