Can anyone ID these bananas?

A freind of mine brought them in to work today (for me to eat...they are delicious)!

He doesnt know what variety they are, nor do I.  The bananas are quite sweet and remind me of Raja Puri.

The banana plants themselves are very tall (18-20 ft) and the fruits are very high up (a ladder is needed to get them) with very thick psuedostems.  He said the stems are 6-8" diameter.

Does anyone have any ideas on what type of bananas these might be?

was the flesh grainy at all.  was the flesh firm, yet with the dark patches on the skin,  was there any astringency?  Maybe Orinoco or ice cream, but the fruit are nice sized so well grown if it is, Saba would be thicker than 6 - 8" diameter, so unless measured too conservatively not Saba.

Alan-

As for the stem diameter, the 6-8" was a conservavtive number.  My friend said they were fat...some maybe 10" or more!   I thought he might have been exaggerating, but perhaps not!

As for the fruit itself.....I suspect another "taste test" (and "interior photos") is in order.  More on this shortly......

Yeah I agree with Alan here. You sould go join the bananas.org forums and post over here Larry. Saba would have a large diameter, as they are known as the Sequoia of edible bananas. It is also an ABB banana(( acuminata X balbsiana)X balbsiana) if I understand the genetics correctly, which makes it more of a plantain than a dessert banana because of the balbsiana influence. Saba are edible out of hand when they are dead ripe, but I hear they make awesome tostones.
