Rainfall for 2007

Well it began to rain late last night.  So far just about 2" have come down.  During a break I ran out and spread 100 lbs of Apex Palm Fertilizer.

Hopefully the palms grow faster than the weeds.   :P

Monday Morn-->turned off the irrigation system good for a week  :D

Our local TV weathermen drive me crazy. I heard one last night refer to how wonderful this January has been with all the sunshine. No mention of record low temps on an almost daily basis, 15% humidity, and how we are 5-6" below normal rainfall. If there is even a 30% chance of rain, it's mentioned in cautionary terms and might affect our drive time.

At our place in Papa Bay, South Kona we got a little over 3 inches from this last storm that passed thru here a few days back.  It was welcome as it was getting a bit dry.  I don't keep rain records so I don't know what our total 2007 rainfall has been up to now but January was on the dry side for us.  For us Winter tends to be our drier and sunnier time of the year with an occasional storm passing thru (very unpredictable how many reach us here this far south).  We have Summer maximum rainfall - quite different from most of the rest of Hawaii.  Then El Nino makes its appearance and all Hawaii tends to be drier than normal - has this been the case this time for the rest of you Hawaii palm growers?

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Well, we certainly didn't have 1400mm in Feb, but it's still been pretty wet here, with plenty of VERY heavy showers of varying length. We're up to just over 30 inches for 2007 (=about 765mm).

Bo,

I love those kind of downpours and that fresh smell of the air as it gets cleaned out. We are still very dry here and really have had next to nothing, in rain so far this year. Can't wait till we start getting downpours like that.

By the way, BEAUTIFUL landscaping.

happ: I've lived in SoCal now since 1987. I'm convinced our rainfall averages are extremely deceptive. I think I can count the number of "average years" since '87 on one hand, and have enough fingers left to turn on my sprinklers.

Using San Diego as an example. We average 10" per year, which sounds arid to anyone living anywhere else. What really happens is we get 5-7 inches of rain for 4 years, and on year 5 we get 23 inches. It's not that exact sequence, but over 20 years the ratio is about that.

I don't know who he is either, but he's probably out of work, out of his head, out of self respect, and out of bread, he's probably under-loved and under fed and wants to go home.

When I tracked him down he said this: "Please don't tell them how you found me. Don't tell them how you found me give me a break.

Give me a break."

I can relate to "average" being deceptive, but keep in mind what "average" actually means. Some people here use the word "normal" when they refer to the amount of rain during a particular period, and "normal" is DEFINITELY just plain wrong. As an example, these are the total rainfall numbers, at our specific location, for the month of February for the ten years since 1998:

1998: 1.65 inches

1999: 23.39

2000: 2.29

2001: 18:46

2002: 11.61

2003: 6.27

2004: 13.86

2005: 10.84

2006: 7.56

2007: 13.98

Average for the month of Feb for the last 10 years: 10.99 inches/280 mm.

2002 and 2005 are pretty close to the "average", but to call them "normal" would definitely be a stretch of the imagination!!

In Houston, I'm at 14.34" as of yesterday.  That's about 3.5" above normal and 8" over last ytd.  Even though spring has had it's painful cold snaps, the rain situation has been nice and steady.  Last night we got down to 37F, only 3F above the record low set in 1939.  IMHO, take out the urban heat island and it ties the record.

If you haven't seen this animation: http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/12_week.gif it's informative to check from time to time - it certainly shows what you folks in FL and the desert southwest are going through right now.  With the last few weeks of rain, almost all of TX is caught up to normal.

San Diego is stuck at 3.39", but that goes back to last July.

(We measure from July 1 to June 30.)

Our average for a year is 10.77", and our average by this date is 8.97". Our total last year was 5.42". I looked it up and we've had 1 "average year" in the 20 I've been in SoCal. By average I mean + or - 2'' from average. Feast but mostly famine rules here.

More lunchtime digging. In the last 153 years (starting in 1854) San Diego has had 47 years in which the rainfall was at-or-above average.

The math: 70% of those years our rainfall is below average.

Terry,

Okay I will bite! :D

If records have been kept since 1854,and only a third of those years are average or above, why is the average as high as it is? Were there record FLOODS in some of those years bringing the average UP? ???

Suffice it to say you guys in southern California live in a rain forsaken desert! :;): Hope you see some measureable rain soon!

Our annual rainfall amounts look something like this: 5, 8, 7, 22, 6, 8, 5, 7, 19... probably an exaggeration but not much.

Those El Nino years really screw with the concept of average. I do notice my plants enjoy the real stuff better than the piped in water.

Our reservoirs are still rather full from the 20 inches we got 2 years ago. The local media won't make a deal of it until they can send a former runway model/reporter to damn on a lake 30ft below normal.
